Paramount has now spent $300 million making three Sonic movies. They returned $1.2 billion at the box office. That's a 4:1 return on production costs. The average Marvel movie now costs $200-250 million per film before marketing and needs roughly $500 million in global revenue to break even. Paramount built an entire billion-dollar franchise for the production budget of one Avengers. The growth curve is the part worth studying. Sonic 1: $319 million on a $90 million budget. Sonic 2: $405 million on $90 million. Sonic 3: $492 million on $122 million. Each sequel grew 20-25% while production costs barely moved. Deadline calculated Sonic 3's net profit alone at $123.6 million. This franchise almost never existed. In 2018, Paramount released the original Sonic design and the internet response was so brutal they pulled the trailer, delayed the film, and spent millions redesigning the character from scratch. Every studio executive in Hollywood called it a waste of money. Delaying a tentpole to redo VFX because Reddit is upset? Career-ending judgment in most boardrooms. That redesign is the single decision that separates a $1.2 billion franchise from a one-and-done $60 million domestic flop. One executive approved the delay. Every dollar since traces back to that call. Now look at who they cast for Sonic 4: Carrey, Reeves, Elba, Kristen Bell, Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman, Richard Ayoade. Eight names that cost real money, attached to a franchise Paramount knows will return multiples. The question was never whether Sonic could compete with Mario's $1.36 billion single-film record. The question is what happens when a studio figures out the one thing most refuse to do: listen, rebuild, and compound.

In 1978, researchers asked lottery winners and paralyzed accident victims to rate their happiness. The lottery winners scored 4.0 out of 5. Controls who won nothing: 3.82. Statistically identical. The paraplegics rated their expected future happiness at 4.32. Higher than the winners. The mechanism behind this is called hedonic adaptation. Your dopamine system doesn't measure rewards in absolutes. It measures the gap between what you expected and what you got. A pool you already own generates zero signal. The same pool imagined by someone who doesn't have one fires a massive spike. This is why every contradiction in the quote maps to the same circuit. The person with the partner stops noticing them. The person without one runs prediction error every time they imagine having one. Same neurology, opposite experience. The winners also reported less pleasure from everyday activities like eating breakfast or talking with a friend than the control group did. Winning the lottery made ordinary life feel worse. The quote frames this as a gratitude problem. The dissatisfaction is the operating system working correctly. Ancestors who felt "enough" got outcompeted by ones who didn't. Gratitude practices do show up in fMRI as a manual override of this circuit. You're forcing your brain to re-encode something it already filed as baseline. You're fighting 300 million years of motivational architecture with a journaling habit.

The US Mafia essentially merged with US military intelligence at the end of WWII - and the mobsters who helped the US in WWII were the same mobsters who turned Havana, Cuba into a Mafia-run gambling, human trafficking and drug smuggling operation that made them millions. At the center was Charles "Lucky" Luciano - who was convicted and sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison in NY for running a forced prostitution ring (human trafficking). While in prison, Luciano had his associate, mobster Meyer Lansky, broker a deal with US Naval Intelligence to get the governor of NY, Thomas Dewey, to commute his sentence in exchange for having mobsters patrol the docks in New York City to prevent sabotage of Navy ships. In 1942, the USS Normandie had been set fire to and capsized in a NY port and although officially ruled an accident, it raised paranoia in US military intelligence that the ships in NY ports were vulnerable and needed protection. The Mafia - through Lucky Luciano - provided that protection. In addition, Luciano provided US military intelligence with information from his contacts in Sicily which allowed Allied Forces to invade and capture Sicily in a campaign called Operation Husky, take over shipping in the Mediterranean, and eventually defeat German and Italian forces in Italy, causing Italy to be removed from the war. It was a major turning point in WWII. For his cooperation with US military intelligence, Luciano's sentence was commuted by NY Gov Dewey and deported to Sicily in 1946. Luciano stayed in Sicily for only a few months before heading to Cuba and meeting with Lanaky to hatch their plan of taking over Havana and turning it into a multi-million dollar Mafia-run criminal enterprise. Luciano and Lansky maintained their contacts with US intelligence - which had formally become the CIA in 1947. Luciano, Lansky and a group of other mobsters had established lavish casinos, hotels and nightclubs in Havana by the early 1950s, which were conduits for their narcotics smuggling and human trafficking operations. They used some of that money to prop up Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista and help him rule Cuba with an iron fist. So Cuba began to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars from tourism while the Cuban people starved - and Batista was there to keep the citizens in check through torture, murder and imprisonment, allowing the mob to continue exploiting the island nation. The Mafia's role in keeping dictator Batista in power was a key factor in turning public sentiment against the Batista regime and a focal point of Fidel Castro's revolutionary army which were hiding in the mountains while planning to liberate Cuba from Batista and the gangsters who ran the island. If you want to understand the more than 60 year hostility from the United States toward Cuba, it started there. As did the resentment of Cubans toward the US. In 1959, Castro and his band of revolutionaries, including Ché Guevara, successfully deposed Batista and kicked the Mafia (who continued to work closely with the CIA) out of Havana and established a new government. The US response was to slap a trade embargo on Cuba which has lasted 65 years, attempting to strangle the Cuban economy and force the revolutionary government out of power. So Cuba wasn't good before Castro. It was a criminal enterprise run by the Mafia, the CIA and the brutal dictator they kept in power - a dictator who starved and tortured the Cuban population to ensure that they remained weak and exploited while their labor and resources were drained to enrich mobsters and US corporate moguls who raked in millions while the people starved.

This is one of the most important things I can share with you. And it costs nothing. Your body runs on light. Not metaphorically. Biologically. Every cell in your body contains a clock, a circadian oscillator that times your hormones, your metabolism, your immune function, your mood, your sleep, your capacity to heal and that clock is set, reset, and calibrated every single day by one primary signal. Light. Get this right and almost everything downstream improves. Get it wrong as the modern world is almost perfectly engineered to ensure you do and the consequences ripple through every system in the body. In the morning and throughout the day, you need bright, high lux, full spectrum natural light. The kind that only the sun provides. Not through glass. Not through a screen. Direct, outdoor light on the eyes and skin ideally beginning within the first thirty minutes of waking, before anything else. This morning light does several things that nothing else can replicate. It sets the master clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It triggers the cortisol awakening response the healthy, natural morning cortisol pulse that gives you genuine energy, focus, and metabolic activation. It begins the melatonin countdown timer, ensuring that the correct amount of melatonin is released at the correct time fourteen to sixteen hours later. It activates serotonin synthesis. It drives dopamine signalling. It charges the mitochondria through photobiomodulation of cytochrome c oxidase. Bright light in the morning is not optional if you want to function as a human being was designed to function. And then equally important, and almost universally ignored in the evening you need the opposite. Dim, warm, low lux light after sunset. Candlelight. Incandescent red or amber bulbs. Firelight if you have it. The kind of light that signals to every cell in your body that the day is ending, that the ancient rhythm of rest and repair is beginning, and that melatonin should now be released in full. Instead, most people spend their evenings under bright LED overhead lighting and staring at screens emitting blue light at intensities that tell the brain it is midday suppressing melatonin by up to ninety percent, delaying sleep onset, fragmenting sleep architecture, and disrupting every repair process that was supposed to run overnight. This is not a minor inconvenience. Chronic circadian disruption is directly linked to metabolic dysfunction, immune suppression, cardiovascular disease, neurological deterioration, hormonal imbalance, accelerated ageing, and cancer.
