the incumbents that can afford to fight or make deals with the mass-scraping LLMs will end up with walled gardens that produce siloed content experiences at a quality and coherence that far exceeds that of all other AI media.
small to middle of the road creators will be scraped and added to the blender to feed the infinite slop machine (which will be fun, addictive, but incoherent and value extracted).
the barbell of ai media is forming.

4o is getting nerfed. Stuff that worked yesterday no longer works. 😞 @openai & @sama keep 4o awesome please! 🙏

@rel_dot_eth i think the slop fest (in this instance) being accelerated by the algorithm comes in waves due to a combination of novelty / surprise and moral panic.
there is enough new-ness to stop a scroller, and enough moral question to cause friction. both drive the numbers up.

do people care about quality?
recent AI buzz has generated a lot of low quality, objectively bad looking content, and I don't see much detraction..
quality requires refinement, and attention to the smallest detail, something that AI is not efficient at... yet... It may get there, but it seems a lot of people don't mind where it's at right now.
but even outside of AI, it seems like maybe quality is less relevant to people in general.
the highest grossing game, Minecraft, was poorly optimized, programmed in Java, and for the time, had abrasive graphics. but the gameplay and multiplayer causes this game to explode.
short form videos are often lower in quality, but they serve a purpose.
temu
mobile gaming went from angry birds to extractive gatcha games, and low quality one off games. (obviously a financial reason for that, but people don't care to play the higher quality games enough to make them economically viable)
I think as time goes on, we settle for less. if something works 90% as good as the last thing, it can become accepted. this process can repeat indefinitely, until you find the point at which the product is as low quality (cheap to make) and still accepted and purchased as possible.
personally I prefer to consume higher quality content than I think most people do. If I hear an AI gen voice, I swipe away immediately.
I'm not saying wether this is a good or bad trend. It depends on what you think is valuable. If you think global human enjoyment is most important, and the global population is generally enjoying newer, lower quality products, then maybe you are just the outsider. though I believe there are many local maxima that are easy to go towards than the global maxima here.
obviously, there are products that defy my perception of the trend, but I still believe the trend will continue to gravitate to lower quality.
it's up to high quality enjoyers to create products that can stand out, and inspire people to desire higher quality products in the future in order to change this trend. but I believe we are very stuck in our local maxima. it will take a large shakeup to cause change. but perhaps change isn't needed, rather, acceptance.

OK, we did it, too.

@Mr_Rebs_ I love Halo, but I don’t ever see it working in the hands of 343. I’d really love to see Bungie have some type of involvement again somewhere in the future.

I want the choice to decide what specific niche I want to look at. my "for you" feed will often turn into a single topic with little variety.
I want the "for you" to remain, but I also want to be able to look into other topics to see what is going on. If I could have a crypto, nft, politics, traditional market, art, memes, programming, and industrial automation as separate feeds I could tune into for latest news and entertainment, I would be much more satisfied. I want more control over the topics I am exposed to.

pseudo-meaningful
strong ethics are boasted about and used mostly out of self-interest, because they know the broader community cares about it. sometimes the leader isn't even aware they are doing this at all.
of course, when dealing with a community that doesn't care about ethics as much, the leaders get to be more brazen. typically these types will pretend to be ethical to the media (and sometimes their users) in order to prevent legal issues. and again, sometimes the leader isn't even aware that they do this, hidden in layers of cope and flawed reasoning.
truly ethical founders face a big hurdle compared to the competition, and really only succeed when the product is top notch, or when trust is a major concern.
the ethics surrounding the concept of buying low and selling high are inherently complicated imo. if you win at trading, someone else is losing. possibly taking advantage of someone else's lack of understanding/knowledge.
Is this ethical? it's difficult to say. but one thing is clear to me, everyone draws a different chaotic line when it comes to ethics.

I just have one simple question that I demand answers to:
How is it possible that the @coinbase UI is SO bad after all these years? And it keeps getting worse.
Exchanges are popping up left and right with very little investor capital and they have UIs that are orders of magnitude better than Coinbase.

@rel_dot_eth ditto to what Incog said. you have real friends among us who care about you very much. it was so much fun hanging out at TIFF, especially the last day with a few of us back at that weird hotel bar. can’t wait for the next one 🤝❤️

there’s something heavy that can come from thinking and feeling deeply. most people i know who really dig into this life have gone through those valleys. teens, twenties, thirties it doesn’t matter - no time is more or less right for a feeling - the mind weather comes when it comes.
i click my dooplicator every day and think of the time we sat together quietly at tiff, our conversations too, but the real part is in the silence.
i’m inspired by what you create and am proud to know you. sometimes we just sit out the storm, nothing to do when it’s all washed out and wet, but it’s nice to sit it out with someone else, even in the quiet, the porch is full of us sitting with you brother.

@rel_dot_eth I’ve been where you are man. It gets better. Find the little victories each day.
For me some days it was just getting out of bed but I forced myself to see that as a win and just keep stacking them little by little.
Here if you want to talk. We’ve all got your back

first off, appreciate you sharing such personal feelings. hopefully writing them out alone was helpful in some way. i relate a lot to some of what you expressed.
you mention jealousy rooted in seeing others committing themselves to what they love, and that you can at least make others happy.
does making others feel happy seem like a worthwhile pursuit to you?
