Why did India slip from 4th to 6th in nominal GDP rankings? India’s growth rate has been higher than countries like Japan and the United Kingdom. So how can a leading and faster running athlete fall behind lagging and slow running ones in the race? The answer is very simple - currency effect India measures its GDP in Indian Rupees (INR), but global rankings are calculated in US dollars. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, India’s GDP appears smaller in USD terms even if the domestic economy is growing strongly. For example: Earlier: 1 USD ≈ Rs 84 Now: 1 USD ≈ Rs 92 (due to Iran war) This depreciation of roughly 10% means that, when converted into dollars, India’s GDP also appears lower by a similar margin, purely due to exchange rate movement, not because the economy shrank. As a result, shifts in ranking are often temporary and currency-driven, rather than a reflection of underlying economic weakness. Bottom line: Congress doesn't need to be so happy. India’s growth trajectory remains intact; nominal GDP rankings can fluctuate due to exchange rate changes rather than real economic performance.
