Nowruz Mubarak to all the Iranian Americans who call New York City home! It was an honor to celebrate Charshanbeh Soori with so many of you in anticipation of spring, renewal, and - now especially - the enduring hope of a new day for the Iranian people.
Nowruz is typically a time of good feeling, but this year is different. I continue to stand in opposition to this war, and I wish as many moments of joy as possible for all Iranians observing this special holiday.

I campaigned on a commitment to create the Department of Community Safety, an unprecedented, whole-of-government approach to making sure every New Yorker is safe in our city. We just took a major step towards achieving it. Today, I signed an Executive Order creating the Office of Community Safety, led by our new Deputy Mayor Renita Francois. This office will focus on preventing gun-violence, meeting mental health crises with trained professionals, exploring innovative approaches to crime prevention, tackling hate crimes, and supporting survivors. Our city has the power to forge a bold, forward-looking vision for community safety -- and we're wasting no time using it.

We shouldn’t have to dust off history books to find Democrats leading with courage and ambition.
Universal child care would reshape our economy, give parents breathing room, expand opportunity for children, and restore faith that government can actually work for working people.
@SenWarren and I are fighting to make it happen. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…

Today, an administrative immigration judge ordered the deportation of Rafael Rubio, a City Council employee. This is an affront to justice. A dedicated public servant with legal authorization to remain in the country, Rafael showed up for a routine immigration appointment and, despite following the rules, he was detained and has now been held for months. He should be immediately released.

If you own a home with a basement, attic, or backyard, chances are you’ve thought about using it to earn a little extra income or as space for a loved one. We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. We're fixing that. Our new toolkit at nyc.gov/aduforyou includes preapproved building plans and a financing calculator so you can get right to building. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.

Our City is overjoyed that Dylan has finally been released from detention and will be back home with his loved ones in the Bronx. What should have been a time for him to focus on finishing high school instead became ten long months of isolation, after he was taken into custody at what was supposed to be a routine immigration hearing last May. Throughout this injustice, Dylan has shown remarkable strength, resilience, and courage. I wish him a smooth and joyful return to his life, his community, and his future here in New York City. He is a New Yorker, and our city is glad to have him home.

Dylan is coming home!! After 10 long months of ICE detention, nothing can undo the injustice Dylan endured, but his release is a step in the right direction. Thank you to @senschumer, @nycmayor, so many others who offered unwavering advocacy and support. nylag.org/breaking-state…

In my meeting with President Trump last month, we discussed ICE’s actions at Columbia University. I asked that the federal government release Leqaa Kordia and drop the cases against four others. I am grateful that Leqaa has been released this evening from ICE custody after more than a year in detention for speaking up for Palestinian rights.

We're implementing the largest expansion of Sammy’s Law in city history: lowering speed limits to 15 MPH at every eligible school by the end of our first term. And we’re not waiting to get started. This year, we’re lowering speed limits at 800 additional locations to 15 MPH, bringing the citywide total for School Slow Zones to nearly 1,300 by the close of 2026. New York City’s streets should be the safest in the world - especially for kids - and City Hall is using every tool at our disposal to make that a reality as quickly as possible.

We’re mourning the loss of four New Yorkers after today’s devastating four-alarm fire in Flushing. My heart is with their families, loved ones and every neighbor impacted. Thank you to the FDNY firefighters and EMS workers who rushed in within minutes, risking their lives to rescue residents and bring the fire under control. Several were injured and we’re wishing them a full recovery. Residents have been displaced and the building suffered significant damage. Our city will stand with everyone affected as the Fire Marshal investigates the cause.

Welcomed Mohamed Diawara to New York last night over iftar in Harlem — then we headed to Marcus Garvey Park to shoot around. Mo grew up in Paris and now, at just 20, is playing forward for the New York Knicks — all while fasting during Ramadan. A few shots in, it became clear why Knicks fans are starting to call him “3awara.” I’ll keep my day job. Welcome to New York, Mo!

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact New York City on Monday as a strong cold front moves through the region. NYCEM has activated the City’s Flash Flood Emergency Plan. Be Ready for Thunderstorms & Rainfall: nyc.gov/beready The severe weather risk remains low but not zero. There is a slight chance of isolated strong storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts Monday evening. Localized flooding is possible, especially in low lying areas, underpasses, and locations with poor drainage. Ponding on roadways may develop during heavier downpours and where storm drains are clogged. Rain may begin Sunday evening around 7 PM and continue overnight into early Monday morning. Periods of moderate rain are likely through the overnight hours and into the Monday morning commute. Conditions become more active Monday as the cold front approaches. Scattered thunderstorms are possible late Monday morning through the afternoon, with the greatest risk for stronger storms during the evening. The most active period is expected between about 6 PM Monday and 2 AM Tuesday as the cold front moves across the region. During this time, heavier downpours, gusty winds, and organized thunderstorms may develop. Rainfall totals across New York City are expected to range from about 1.0 to 1.1 inches on average, with localized amounts up to around 1.25 inches where thunderstorms develop. Most rainfall rates will remain under 0.25 inches per hour, though heavier showers could briefly produce rates near 1 inch per hour. South to southeast winds will increase through Monday, with sustained winds around 15 to 22 mph and gusts that could reach 45 to 55 mph during the evening as the front moves through. Rain and storms gradually taper early Tuesday morning. A brief rain or snow shower cannot be ruled out Tuesday morning as cooler air moves into the region. New Yorkers should allow extra travel time during periods of heavy rain, especially during the Monday evening commute. Avoid driving through flooded streets. Even shallow water can stall vehicles. Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture or trash bins before winds increase. If thunder is heard, move indoors and stay away from open areas. Clear debris from nearby storm drains if it is safe to do so to help reduce street flooding. Stay informed by checking the forecast and signing up for emergency alerts: nyc.gov/notifynyc
