The Global Sumud Flotilla was attacked by drones on Tuesday night in international waters near the Greek Island of Crete.
Several sailing boats appear to have been targeted with explosive devices, damaging or destroying their masts.
More than a dozen drones were spotted flying low over Alma, a large motor yacht, earlier in the night. At around 11pm, organiser Yasemin Acar reported hearing a loud explosion nearby and recorded a video in which she said a “communications jam” was interfering with their radio signal.
Army veteran Greg Stoker, who was on board sailing yacht Ohwayla, reported a chemical device falling from a drone on to the boat. He said in a video that he also experienced radio interference, with songs playing without his control by the Swedish band Abba - the result, he said, of Israel’s "obsession" with Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who is part of the flotilla.
At 11.10pm Novara Media’s Kieran Andrieu reported hearing a loud explosion closer to his boat, Family.
Over the next three hours, around a dozen explosions were heard near to the flotilla, with several hitting sailing masts. One person is believed to have been burned.
Participants remained on high alert at 2am, with life jackets to hand.
