140 tons of fresh salmon plus 111 tons of fuel to get us to Miami plus the weight of a 747-8F in the hot Santiago sun with just about no headwind component for takeoff meant we’d have to employ a little trick not often used…a PACKS OFF takeoff. Usually, air is tapped from the engines to feed the air conditioning and pressurization systems through Pressurization and Air Conditioning Kits (PACKS). Over 90% of the time, this is how we configure the jet for departure and how it remains configured throughout the flight. This air we tap from the engines to run the air conditioning and pressurization during takeoff robs us of some available thrust because not all air coming in the front of the engine is coming out the back as thrust but in most cases it doesn’t matter because we don’t really need it. There are however times when, because of a combination of weight and atmospheric conditions, we need all available air coming in the front to come out the back as thrust as we cannot afford to rob the engines of any available thrust. Today was one of those days, hence the written reminder on my yoke. Once airborne, well sequentially turn each PACK to ON and normalize the pneumatic system and back home we go…
