@ScottDMenzel yes! and this is why ebert was so special, because he met each film on its own terms. there isn’t some objective 1-100 scale of bad-good. it’s just about whether the movie was effective at what it set out to do.

I’ve been reading the discourse around Michael, and even without seeing it yet, I have a pretty good sense of what the issue is. A lot of critics seem to want the film to be something it’s not. They’re looking for a deeper exploration of the backstory and the controversy, rather than a more streamlined, accessible version of the story. On the flip side, general audiences often just want to hear the music, watch the performances, and have a good time. I don’t think either perspective is wrong, but that disconnect between expectations is where the divide comes from. More broadly, I think it’s a real issue that many people in my field struggle to engage with a film on its own terms, instead of judging it against what they think it should be, especially when it comes to movies that are centered around real people. I remember the same debate around The Greatest Showman, which I personally love. A common criticism was that P.T. Barnum was a terrible person and that the film glossed over that reality. But that was never the point of the movie. It wasn’t trying to be a historically accurate portrait. Instead, it was a musical about dreams, identity, and embracing what makes you different. I think this kind of mismatch in expectations is a big reason why there’s such a growing divide between critics and general audiences. At the same time, it goes both ways. Critics often champion more awards-driven films that can be inaccessible, and general audiences sometimes go in expecting something different and come away disappointed. The disconnect isn’t one-sided. This is happening across both groups.

cosign for a similar experience. if you haven’t experienced obesity (or just difficulty with being overweight in general) you cannot know how amazing it is to finally think “i’m NOT crazy, my body IS struggling and my willpower is NOT enough.” its acceptance, not excuses.

re: @TheCut article around GLP-1s (because my FYP has been VERY active on this topic over the last 48 hrs) CW for weight loss discussion there is a pervading argument among the misinformed that utilization of GLP-1 medications for weight loss/weight monitoring is somehow the root of all evil when it comes to toxic diet culture. while i have no doubt that the accessibility of GLP-1s has exacerbated some people’s EDs and led to the perversion of ultra thinness, to take such a narrow viewpoint to an entire class of drugs—and most notably, the actual real life patients prescribed—is very one-sided. as someone who has lost 100 lbs on wegovy and reversed insulin resistance, sleep apnea, prehypertension, high cholesterol, and vastly improved my cardiovascular health, GLP-1s are an effective prophylactic for preventing type two diabetes and managing weight, especially when monitored and supervised by a doctor. i always say that one’s’ personal experience with obesity is their own, and if thy can maintain health, more power to them. for many, it does reach a tipping point, especially with age—which was my experience. either way, these tired, blanket statements made by large swaths of people about patients on GLP-1s are actively toxic and full of misinformation and wrongful projections, mostly about unconscious biases around fatness and what makes someone gain weight or lose weight. this latest article by the cut around a woman cutting off her friend on prescription wegovy is a far too common tale of people actively judging others for the medical choices they are making with their own bodies. even in my own experience on GLP-1s, i genuinely felt when i first started taking it that i would be excommunicated and shunned from certain friend circles if i talked about it, despite the fact that i was on a prescription medication for my own personal health—something i have taken back due to science. that said, if you are find yourself actively or unconsciously feeding into a narrative that GLP-1s are a net negative to greater society, i genuinely implore you to do more research and to broaden your viewpoint. for millions of people, they have have been transformative, life changing, and completely safe, as well as a tool in addition to mindful eating and exercise. in addition, when it comes to ED recovery (as someone with binge eating disorder), taking personal responsibility and self-accountability for one’s condition are critical in terms of overall happiness. i didn’t need to comment on this article, especially as a wee little heated rivalry fan account. but as someone who has had a successful, mindful relationship with a few name brand GLP-1s the last 2+ years, i wanted to get this off my chest.

No. Rachel was 100% right about their wedding. Neither Ilya nor Shane care about a wedding. They care about being married. The way A LOT OF PEOPLE DO. Not everyone cares about doing a whole elaborate thing for other people to witness - they just want to be married already.

@KmaFr_ it was a cynical time, and people had *expectations* from the wachowskis. plus emile hirsch had just fake-died controversially in INTO THE WILD and matthew fox was insanely famous for LOST, so i think it was also hard for audiences to see either of them as other characters
