He was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 2, 2026, by President Donald J. Trump in a White House ceremony for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War on September 14, 1968. He is a living recipient Early in the assault, three soldiers from his point squad were severely wounded and pinned down between enemy machine gun bunkers. Richardson advanced three separate times through heavy machine gun and small-arms fire to rescue and drag each wounded soldier to safety. With his platoon separated and the company surrounded, he instructed his men to provide covering fire, then advanced alone up Hill 222 under enemy fire to a shallow irrigation ditch for better visibility. He directed tactical air strikes, marking enemy positions with smoke grenades. About an hour into the effort, an NVA sniper wounded him in the right leg. Ignoring the injury and the intense close explosions, Richardson continued directing airstrikes for seven more hours (total ~8 hours), calling in approximately 32 strikes and over 75,000 pounds of ordnance. This devastated the enemy base camp. When the enemy withdrew, his platoon found him alive but wounded and temporarily deafened. He declined medical evacuation to remain and lead his soldiers. His actions allowed the company to secure the hill unopposed and are credited with saving 85 American lives.
