the teenage chronicles continue: my son calls for me after his shower. he says he needs my help. "mom, can I make my body like the wrestlers? I wanna be shiny. I wanna see it." inside, I am HOLLERING. it's an incredibly wholesome request. we have body oil. it's Sunday and the schedule is clear. I oblige him. I also knew it was a great memory loading. 😂 we spend probably ten minutes like we're in gorilla position at a WWE live event. he puts on his favorite shorts and checks himself out in the mirror. he flexes his incredibly thin and high glossed frame slightly and I leave him for privacy. he stays in the bathroom for about ten more minutes. I hear him dropping things because he's increased the shine independently. I can smell the damn shea butter from the hallway. I hear a camera flash, then disappointment in the form of a deep sigh... "hey mom, I don't wanna be slippery anymore. now what do I do?" "are you done with your experience?", I ask while choking back extreme laughter but trying to be the adult. "yes. this is awful now." I know he's now overstimulated and the Wrestlemania fantasy has ended. I wipe my tears from laughing and head in to help ease the crisis. Asked him if he was good and he nodded. Then he realized I was laughing AT him, he laughed and said, "mom I need the muscles they're not even there yet". "You have to work harder for the muscles. You're gonna have to start doing it every day and not just the weekend, buddy. You're handsome now, but if you want more muscles, it's like doing your homework." he mumbles softly as the light bounces off his exquisitely narrow beginner abs: "aww shit."

Someone put a note on my street parked car that said “I sure would like to park in front of my house.” Now I’m trying to decide how big of poster board I need in my windshield to get my “street parking is public parking move to the suburbs if you want a driveway” message across.

Just went to what everyone was calling the “best wing spot in Atlanta.” The city of Buffalo would burn this restaurant down for how small and underwhelming these wings were. My god.

My fiance's bridal shower is today so I get to bring the bouquet(s). I'm doing every one by hand after I bought a bunch of different flowers. Every Aunt and Grandma gets a small one and the large one for my Bride to be. Lets hope I can pull this off 😂

Ppl are being disingenuous. Her outfit isn’t ugly or revealing by any means but it’s simply not fitting for the occasion lol (the same way that blazer and shorts combo she had wasn’t fitting either)

@alyssaleann As the wife of a DJ who has been doing weddings (Among other gigs) for 30 years - thank you. It’s not just 4 hours of work, they consume days on end with preparation, calls, custom mixes, etc. There is a lot of hidden work, but it is work. No other gig is like this

I’m not in the wedding industry and had a cheap DIY wedding a decade ago, but a lot of you guys are really weird and dismissive toward wedding vendors There’s a good and important critique to be made of an industry that can be rampantly consumerist and feed into/off of weird social trends! But most of the people hired to make a wedding happen run their own small businesses. Some of them are good, some bad, some sleazy. But a lot of them are really cool, creative, skilled folks who love love and are trying to make a living the same as the rest of us No one should feel they have to spend $100K on a wedding! I think it’s good when we talk about ways people can celebrate their commitment that are inexpensive and/or unique. I think “what is our wedding FOR?” is a question every couple should ask themselves as they begin planning But the truth is that wealthy people hosting lavish events is a massive supporter of the creative economy: florists, artists, set design, calligraphers, photographers, bakers, etc etc It’s very, uh, interesting to see people who are normally champions of labor complain about the costs of, say, florals (choosing this as the example bc I know most about how it works). I recently was in conversation with a well-respected florist, and she said her minimum is $7k. Another person replied “oh. well. good for you!” and the florist patiently explained that *she* doesn’t get $7k for a day of work. Growing and shipping flowers is expensive. Paying her team a living wage is expensive. The work of wedding florals is a lot of planning and at least 4 days of execution and then another day of cleanup. And I know she has this conversation allllll the time It feels very overlapped with discussions about the cost of luxury clothing/goods — there are many things I’ll never be able to afford, and that’s okay, actually! It doesn’t mean they’re necessarily a scam or overpriced or shouldn’t exist; it just means I can’t afford them AND it intersects with the “no one wants to be a villager” phenomenon: sure, everyone in that chain of services deserves to be paid a living wage! Just not by me! I can’t afford that. But I want it Anyway. Weird blind spot that I see a lot. I think it deserves more introspection I might write about this more, because it also intersects with some things I’ve been pondering with regards to my own work (basically: thank you to the rich companies of corporate America, who pay my salary and that of many blue collar workers for months every time they decide to renovate their office, as well as giving me an outlet for some of the best, most creative work of my career and allowing me to hire artists and craftspeople. They’re essentially modern day patrons; but it’s weird! I know this is all weird!)
