I built a dashboard to explore the last 25+ years of @nytimes coverage. 1.5B words, 2.2M articles, 26K reporters. It's fascinating to look at the world’s preeminent news organization not as daily stories but as patterns of attention, ebbing and flowing. tedalcorn.github.io/nyt/

@TedAlcorn @nytimes I think you need to find a way to bin podcast transcripts from this, they will be massively pushing the number up

Added cool new features to my @nytimes dashboard and still marveling at what you can learn by treating the paper of record as data. Check out obituaries: 👇

@teddyschleifer Maybe it is a leading indicator of their political shift when a longtime @burningman supporter cuts back their annual donation - heard that while reporting this: bloomberg.com/news/features/…

NEW:
Sergey Brin, his "MAGA Girlfriend" and a $57 million bid to kill the California billionaires tax.
The inside story of how a Google cofounder and a gut-health influencer ghosted Matt Mahan and confronted Gavin Newsom — even if Newsom is "handsome."

@NYTAmy @jessicabennett Might be of interest @JillFilipovic, @amandahess, @megangarber — about gender and who gets remembered.
English

The gender gap is real and stubborn. Despite a meaningful jump in 2018, and the great Overlooked No More series, the Times still publishes 2 obits of men for every 1 for a woman. @NYTAmy @jessicabennett

The dashboard, Below the Fold, lives here for now: tedalcorn.github.io/nyt/
Let me know what you find in it, and other features I should add!

@mattyglesias @JHWeissmann Then you ought to take into consideration the distinction between *having* plans and *running on* plans.
‘Plans are worthless but planning is everything’ and all that.

Excellent interview with @NYCMayor's Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Renita Francois about where her vision. Very promising points about auditing needs in the existing system, focusing on measurement, building structure. @ByChipBrownlee @teamtrace thetrace.org/2026/04/renita…

Trump's pardons are depriving the Crime Victims Fund of vital revenue.
So far $113M in criminal fines has been forgiven that could have gone to shooting survivors and other victims of violent crime.

@dieworkwear Pigouvian tax on visual externalities could end poorly

@benryanwriter @DouthatNYT @m_delamerced @BenjBrantley @KSchulten That's definitely possible - I'd have to look at the distribution over time, a bit more complicated to visualize.
English

@TedAlcorn @DouthatNYT @m_delamerced @BenjBrantley @KSchulten Yes, I saw evidence of articles getting longer, which to me made no sense given the imperative that writers have received to keep their articles shorter of late. Is it possible that some articles have gotten longer for some reason while others have gotten shorter?
English

I added a feature to the 'Below The Fold' dashboard that creates a histogram of the range of article-lengths by each reporter. A lot of diversity in these — can you guess who is who? @DouthatNYT @m_delamerced @BenjBrantley @KSchulten
