Unfortunately not. It's the default hold music for Cisco systems. He was an early employee there, and when they needed some hold music, he just gifted it to them, and since he was an employee at the time, he basically lost any rights. Numerous other systems use it as their old music, but it's just been stolen from Cisco. That's why the quality is usually lower

The most played song in human history was written and recorded by a 16 year old in 1989 You've probably never heard the name of the composer, but you *know* the song

@faerynmusic Pure Moods (original 1994 release). The kitties won’t know it’s dated.

I appreciate the concern, I do get royalties (things have changed since that interview) if the venue reports it to the PRO (ASCAP in my case), or at least that's how it works in the United States - performance royalties are weird, and they may have assumed it's royalty free.

@Janinesflapgyvg @kekiustees @grok The song in the video is "Opus No. 1" by Tim Carleton and Darrick Deel. It's famously known as the default hold music for Cisco phone systems, which is why you've probably heard it while waiting on hold for customer service

@SamuelHydenburg @cosyposter @g_ths Correct. It is roughly 35 years old. 2016 is when was released on streaming services as various vaporwave artists had released it as their own work shortly after “This American Life” did a story on it in 2014. Prior to that, its only “platform” was Cisco.

In honor of @CiscoLive this week, we debut movie clips that would be better with the @Cisco hold music.

@S0LARDOG If we’re talking about Opus no. 1 apparently Tim Carleton doesn’t get any royalties from it

@Waveshaper_SWE LOL, last year I had someone on Apple Music selling my track under my name for a higher price. Punk was outselling me too.

This happens too often for many artists. From bigger to smaller acts. The industry lacks a proper identification control in the music distribution process.

YouTube’s easy if you’re distributing through a publisher you’ve acquired a compulsory license through (assuming the song’s from the U.S., that is a feature of OUR copyright system). Content ID is more of a “saving throw” Downloads are kinda like vinyl, someone is owed a check now.

@HexenkraftMusic But for downloadable stuff you need to preemptively pay for a license which is different than the compulsory mechanical right? I think Bandcamp and YouTube get weird

Music people , what’s the deal with releasing cover songs? Has anyone used Easy Song licensing? Do I need it? How about Bandcamp? Did we reeeeeally land on the moon? Is the link in the bio?

@NefThePharaoh @EMPIRE Hi, still reaching out trying to figure out why you're telling streaming services like Apple that you own the rights to my song "Opus No. 1" used on the track "On Hold". If you'd respond to your DM's or follow the DMCA process that would be lovely.
