By flooding the public information space with deepfakes, synthetic personas and coordinated campaigns, AI-accelerated #disinformation creates enough confusion to unsettle public understanding of events, delay urgent responses from decision-makers, and clouds potential threats such as nuclear signaling that increases the risk of miscalculation and escalation, writes @DanDrollette, the executive editor of @BulletinAtomic. The article highlights real-world cases like Kremlin narratives regarding Ukraine, to show how strategic disinformation shapes global security perceptions, while similar dynamics play out in health and climate debates through conspiracy theories and #misinformation campaigns that weaken official accounts and research. Drollette concludes that mitigating these intertwined dangers requires stronger media literacy, platform governance, and a social norm of actively challenging falsehoods, even when they come from powerful leaders or people close to us. 👉tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

When the @FCC and The @WhiteHouse jointly criticize media coverage of events in Iran — using social media to accuse outlets like The @nytimes, @WSJ @CNN and others of 'terrible reporting,' while hinting that broadcast licenses might not be renewed for those that stray from official messaging — such actions raise alarm regarding the erosion of checks and balances. By using regulatory threats and public condemnation to pressure the press, the executive branch risks compromising a cornerstone of oversight and accountability. Undermining a free and independent press weakens one of the most vital mechanisms for holding government power in check, fostering a climate of fear, self-censorship, and confusion that distorts the public’s understanding of current events. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

Researchers from Queensland University of Technology found that in a one-week snapshot of Australian social media consumers who carefully logged items in their feeds, more than one-fifth (20.5 percent) encountered #misinformation and #disinformation daily. Inaccuracies appeared in ordinary topics like business, celebrity news, local crime and breaking news — not just politics or health — with the suspect items described as false, misleading or from untrustworthy sources. The top criticisms among participants in the study point to headlines that failed to match articles, unknown outlets positioned as authoritative, and sensationalist and click-bait style stories from traditional news outlets – all of which erode public trust and veracity of claims. The researchers found that respondents have adopted defensive habits — such as ignoring unfamiliar sources or assuming information is untrustworthy by default — which weakens civic engagement and may also push them away from verified news sources. The group recommends stronger accountability for digital platforms and media literacy initiatives that reflect people’s everyday information environments and the influence of algorithms and commercial pressures. 👉 tipaz.org/white-papers/r…

Characterizing accurate reporting as 'fake news' during wartime weakens American democracy, writes retired Lt. Gen. @MarkHertling in @BulwarkOnline. He describes the relationship between the press and military as a tense but necessary 'dysfunctional marriage' that jointly serves citizens’ need for both security and accurate information. The piece recounts how journalists exposed atrocities after Desert Storm, illustrating why the public must see war’s realities rather than sanitized narratives. Lt. Gen. Hertling warns that attacking journalists for asking hard questions erodes trust, creates information vacuums, and invites propaganda and #disinformation from adversaries. He concludes that both the military and the press are constitutionally grounded institutions, and that truth — even when uncomfortable — is a vital strategic asset. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

The @washingtonpost reports that a network of pro-Iran propaganda accounts has been spreading posts tied to conspiracy theories about the Jeffrey #Epstein case across major social media platforms. According to the reporting, some posts suggested that U.S. political or military actions were attempts to distract the public from the so-called 'Epstein files.' The article also notes that some of the viral content included misleading clips, reused footage from past events, and AI-generated media presented as real. Researchers cited in the story say the posts gained significant engagement online by tapping into conspiracy narratives that were already widely circulating on social media. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

A federal judge ordered the restoration of @VOANews – a news organization created during World War II to inform foreign audiences exposed to #misinformation and #disinformation – and to resume newsgathering operations in more than 40 languages and distribution to more than 360 million people worldwide. The group had been dark for much of the past year after the @USAGM cut its funding and laid off nearly all of the staff, which the judge said violated press-freedom protections and Congress' control over federal broadcasting funds. First Amendment watchers like @RSF_en hail the ruling, saying that without VOA's global reach and accurate 24-7 news feed, Americans living aboard, the U.S. armed forces and vulnerable populations are more vulnerable to conspiracy theories, false narratives, and orchestrated disinformation campaigns. Media monitors using the VERDAD tracking and verification tool have seen a surge in #misinformation and #disinformation targeted at Spanish-language radio listeners in South Florida, reviving false claims of election fraud and vilifying election workers, @WLRN Public Media reports. The report highlights newly deployed technologies that flag fabricated quotes and unsupported claims undermining information integrity and public trust. These claims target non-English speakers who are especially vulnerable due to their reliance on free media sources and deep trust in familiar-sounding voices. Prof. Eduardo Gamarra of @FIU says broader forces beyond the media airwaves shape perceptions, but that the wider use of tools like VERDAD ensures the accuracy of the information being broadcast, regardless of language. The editors at The @Verge describe the painstaking process some outlets deploy to verify the accuracy of images and videos online in an age AI-enhanced #misinformation and #disinformation, and how consumers can apply some of the same techniques to confirm authenticity and veracity of claims in their own social feeds. The online sleuths at @bellingcat, @nytimes and Indicator scrutinize visuals for inconsistencies, trace origins, and compare with maps, satellite imagery, metadata, and past footage before publication; often rejecting material when they cannot firmly establish provenance even if it appears to be real. Specialists stress that simple edits like cropping are acceptable, but adding or altering elements, especially with AI, turns a photo into propaganda rather than evidence. Because platforms rarely label AI-generated media reliably, experts urge people to slow down, check account histories, reverse-image search, and wait for multiple independent confirmations before sharing emotionally charged information and posts. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

Analysis of thousands of social media posts on X regarding events in Iran shows that viral posts routinely recycle old war footage, mislabel locations, and use AI-generated or even video-game imagery to depict dramatic missile strikes and shootdowns, without credible corroboration, leading technology journal @WIRED reports. Most of the misleading posts come from blue-check, paid premium accounts that can earn money from engagement, creating incentives to spread sensational falsehoods. X's Community Notes sometimes offers corrections, but typically not until posts have already gone viral. State-linked outlets also exploit the chaos, using fake or misattributed visuals to exaggerate successful hits on U.S. and Israeli targets. The lack of accountability and standards has made the platform a prime venue for real-time #disinformation during major conflicts, leaving WIRED and other outlets to recommend that consumers slow down, verify sources and cross-check claims before sharing and potentially amplifying a faulty message. When you consistently find yourself on the opposite side of the overwhelming majority of scientists, physicians, and public health professionals whose lives are dedicated to protecting human health, in favor of a political figure who routinely lies and distorts evidence in favor of his own ideology, you should reconsider what you’re actually defending. - Dr. Jessica Knurick

New media forms have always been met with fear, skepticism, and confusion as each new technology spreads #misinformation and sensationalized information faster than facts, writer and humorist @davejorgenson explains during a recent @TEDTalks. Citing early vulnerabilities and exploitation by Plato and radio dramas like 'War of the Worlds' by Orson Welles, Jorgenson says the public has adapted to each new medium through education, understanding and a bit of humor, including today's #TikTok's and memes. Learning to access, analyze, and evaluate media critically mitigates misunderstanding, reduces anxiety and keeps our relationship with media grounded and human, he says. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

George Washington University professor Richard Restak, MD, and the author of The 21st Century Brain describes how our cognitive development of 'seeing is believing' runs counter to today's social media ecosystem, which rewards users 'whose content spreads widely' and encourages 'more sensational or provocative content.' He argues that because social media platforms are optimized for virality, sensationalized #misinformation is often favored over accuracy, degrading information ecosystems and distorting perception, reasoning, and decision-making. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

Australia’s Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy is examining how climate-related #misinformation and #disinformation circulate in public debate, particularly around climate policy and the reliability of renewable energy. During recent hearings, experts and lawmakers discussed how certain claims spread widely across digital platforms, including through coordinated messaging and networked advocacy efforts like those of the @AtlasNetwork, which the fossil fuel industry supports. The reporting highlights concerns raised in testimony about how disinformation campaigns — including organized efforts that may blur the line between independent commentary and coordinated messaging — can shape public understanding of climate science and energy policy. The inquiry is also considering whether additional transparency measures, such as clearer disclosure of funding sources behind advocacy campaigns, could help address disinformation risks. The committee’s review remains ongoing. Reporting by @grhutchens at @abcnews 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/5f…

Mexican drug cartels are sharing AI-generated #disinformation on social media to magnify and amplify retaliatory destruction and fear after security forces killed top drug lord 'El Mencho' Sunday. False reports that the Guadalajara airport was taken over by assassins, a plane was on fire, and that popular tourist attractions were burning have been shared tens of thousands of times by both unsuspecting users, but also as a #propaganda campaign by the cartel itself, experts say. This strategy makes violence appear more pervasive than it is, undermines trust in official information, and complicates security responses. Analysis found that nearly 40 percent of viral posts lacked context and about a quarter showed signs of AI manipulation. Mexican Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said that authorities have identified various accounts that they would investigate further to determine which have 'direct relationships with an organized crime group.'
