You may be asking yourself why Malema is not appealing from jail, like "Cat" Matlala. It's because his lawyers are clever. They applied for leave to appeal immediately, in the same courtroom right after sentencing — before he could be taken into custody. That application suspends the sentence, so he doesn’t go to prison at all, while the appeal is pending.
