My outdoorsy son just spent most of his weekend hiking trails and roaming wide-open spaces, something he could never do safely back in South Africa. Freedom like this still hits different. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, America. 🇺🇸

Waldo Verwey (11) was shot in the head on 2 October 2025 in Casseldale, Springs (Ekurhuleni, Gauteng), South Africa, and died in hospital around 9 October 2025. The shooting happened at or near the family home on Clydesdale Road, Casseldale. Initial reports widely described it as a home invasion/robbery by armed intruders, with Waldo sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. He received emergency treatment at the scene and was airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he was placed on life support in critical condition. Waldo passed away after about a week in hospital. No arrests were reported.

@RiseAgainstEvil I thought about this the other night.. The more I'm chatting with Afrikaners the more of these types of things come to mind that I just take for granted here and never give a thought about.

Just a question for my Afrikaner followers. A common thing for many people here in the US is sleeping with some kind of noise maker, like a fan or white noise maker. While living in South Africa were any of you able to sleep with one of these to drown out noises or was / is it too dangerous to do so?

@SueMarie1963 He starts his job tomorrow which takes him across the US for projects. So, he'll be pretty busy, but at the same time, his seeing the US, and he is sooooo excited about that. I'm sure down days will be spent exploring! 😅
