We don't have labour shortages; our high unemployment rate can be attributed to migration. No reason why someone on the unemployment benefit couldn't get a job at retail etc except due to the fact that all of our retail workers have been replaced with migrants.
When people apply for jobs which have 1000+ applications, and 98% of them are obviously migrants, there's no shortage.
It's unfair on our citizens, our youth who are looking for work, and the parents of those youth or taxpayers who end up subsidising their living costs with state welfare systems or family.
We have cheap labour from an OECD perspective because our dollar is weak, don't see why we want to suppress it even more.

I’m conflicted.
On one hand, I respect people who follow rules and help maintain a civilized society.

I think you've made accurate statements, but not followed them to their logical conclusions.
The price/demand curve is not the perfect equation we got taught in economics.
Rich Indians literally put gold on their food. I really don't think that they will care if our lamb is $20 or $27 / kg. The poor will never be able to afford our luxury imports.
We are hoping for a few middle class people who were avoiding our exports at $27, but are going to start buying it at $20.
We might sell a bit more. Or the same amount at a higher margin.
