HODGES: Little over year ago, Trump and Vance yelled at Zelenskyy in the Oval Office with this ridiculous assertion that Ukraine had “no cards”. Here we are today, where Ukraine is helping Gulf countries defend themselves against Iranian drones. What an amazing turn of events.

There’s a very funny thing happening on Twitter: by now, even the most notorious pro-Russian collaborators aren’t hiding anything anymore. They openly give interviews detailing how, in 2014, the FSB organized the invasion of a militant unit led by сolonel Igor Girkin after the seizure of Crimea, how they took over Sloviansk with funding from Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, how Russia directly armed, organized, and financed Russian militants and local collaborators against Ukraine in Donbas, and how it openly deployed regular troops without insignia as early as the summer of 2014 to save its proxies from defeat by the Ukrainian army and volunteer forces -- and occupied Donetsk and Luhansk. And yet, useful idiots and shameless corrupt “opinion leaders” still keep pushing the long-forgotten line about how “Nazi Ukraine” was bombing itself in Donbas for “eight years,” and that Putin unleashed the largest bloodbath in Europe since WWII to “protect the people of Donbass.”

Putin’s response was, “No, no foreign soldiers of any kind”. Why? This can only mean he wants to go forward. Third, he has around 17 million square kilometers of land. Yet, he tells Americans, “Look, what’s the problem? It's only about 6,000 square kilometers”. Can you imagine that someone who has millions of square kilometers, 70% of which is underdeveloped and doesn’t have proper infrastructure, is asking for more? Do we really believe that all he needs is an additional 5,800 square kilometers? This is not his goal. Donbas is a strategic place in Ukraine. Once he has our industrial cities and fortifications in the region, there are only open fields and direct roads to our regional capitals. What I mean is that we understand why he wants Donbas. Absurd and inhuman violence is spreading ferociously through the sacred places of the Christian East, profaned by the blasphemy of war and the brutality of business, with no regard for people’s lives, which are considered at most collateral damage of self-interest. But no gain can be worth the life of the weakest, children, or families. No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.

Bin gerade noch in der Ukraine. Hier wird diese Debatte und das Verhalten von GS Rutte genau analysiert. Es ist intensiv zu spüren, wie sehr das Vertrauen in westliche Partner auf den Prüfstand kommt und kritischer wird. Ich empfinde bei meinen ukrainischen Gesprächspartnern aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft ubd Zivilgesellschaft das Gefühl, ausgenutzt zu sein.
