The deeper problem is that western enlightenment ideology (inc socialists) is unable to argue against his fundamental view that 'Power accrues power' (anti-fragility). As mentioned, initially money flew mainly into the extractive/commodities sector that helped the govt stabilize the economy without much industrial (or employment) growth. Given industrial growth is capital intensive (and given🇦🇷 is a much larger economy,) it makes sense for it to take longer than a yr-2 to see any effects. 3. Millei spending cuts mainly targeted the public sector and subsidies+pensions, and one can expect this drive up poverty and unemployment as GDP moves from public to private sector (though he expanded direct cash payments to the poorest -- bypassing a large bureaucratic machine, 4. Debt driven/subsidized consumer economy generally drives up rents, which is exacerbated by high inflation driving up the demand for real estate. So one can assume the the discrepancy in price-value ratio of real estate was very high. It seems the center-left govts used price controls (and subsidies) to 'postpone' this problem, which seem to be one reason for the rise in homelessness in Buenos Aires. But this also seem to have caused the prices to drop since 2024 making the price-discovery more efficient and freeing up supply (i guess old people and poor people had to move further away..). The larger point is, whether you agree with the economic theory being used or not, it seems very premature to declare Millei-nomics as a failure. It might be popular given his demeanor and association with Trump, but that adds nothing to the discussion. --- I am coming from the left, I have also talked to friends in NPP about odious debts, also using Argentina as a model against IMF mandates etc etc, but now I also see how the center-left Peronist govt, while initially achieved remarkable bottom-up growth, then failed to continue through and ended up putting back in sq-1 again. --- anw who cares about, I do want to put my thoughts on the comparison praising SL govt, but guess that'd have to wait. In other words: their economic model is a failure! Meanwhile, Sri Lanka - also under an IMF program - is stabilizing. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re not sliding backwards either. Inflation has cooled, the currency is steadier, and the direction is looking better - and we didn’t have a large US liquidity backstop.
