@TheTrinketMage Honestly I'm fine with it either way. Planeswalkers are generally pretty bad in commander anyway so I don't really see it being a huge problem. maybe they make UW Teferi a gamechanger?
English

@TaylorLorenz @ChrisHarihar well like I said elsewhere that's definitely a side effect of good tech use getting lumped into the (as you pointed out) bad metric of screen time. Much respect to anyone trapped in the premiere box, the actual factual torment nexus.
English

@xtracombatphase @ChrisHarihar Most of it is in Adobe Premiere rn but I am trying to hire another editor to help me! Which will hopefully drastically decrease my screen time 😭
English

@xtracombatphase @ChrisHarihar Are you saying me reporting out stories, writing articles, and producing videos is like committing a crime? Huh?
English

@TaylorLorenz Correct, yeah. That is, to my understanding sort of the ultimate goal, yeah? While I'm less worried about white collar jobs, my biggest hang up with AI in general is the clear intent of executives to be able to cut out creative positions writ large
English

These are good questions! And I think I’m gonna do a whole video breaking down how these companies make money bc it’s a lot. TLDR a lot of MAUs are personal use bc ppl genuinely get value from these products, but also these companies license their models to a zillion other companies that then pay them for that use. These products are also consumer products so they def won’t cut off users.
But when u say cut out the need for users are u talking about how these tech ppl talk abt making humans obsolete and having agents doing all white collar work?

@ChrisHarihar @TaylorLorenz think it depends on how exactly that time is being spent but fair enough.
English

@xtracombatphase @TaylorLorenz Reductive is critiquing a reporter who covers the Internet for spending a lot of time on the Internet.
English

@TaylorLorenz Apologies then I can actually v much agree with that. I think I had a knee jerk rxn to you saying 17 hrs screen time and got caught up in the narrative and on its face irony of it all. I do think that the metric is bad because its too broad.
English

I’d never say it’s “nothing to worry about”! FWIW I’ve said it’s a bad metric bc there’s good screen time and bad. IMO writing, editing, learning, connecting etc is good! Passive consumption for hours, not good. Listening to Spotify while I run counts as screen time! It’s a broken metric imo
English

Taylor's self admitted screen time is 17 hrs btw
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz
“We don’t go around policing whether ppl have used microwaves a few seconds too long, or played a video game for a few minutes too long. Why try to decide whether it’s evil for me to spend a tiny fraction of my daily energy on a computer program I personally think is valuable?”
English

@TaylorLorenz so a bunch of these MAUs are people using these tools in a professional capacity? Where they are forced to? Isn't the whole value pitch of these models that eventually they will cut out the need for the users? Like that's the investment biz are making right?
English

Well if you look at Anthropic they’re making money hand over fist by selling access to their models to businesses and building useful tools like Claude code. I don’t think I can break down all these companies biz models in a tweet and I’d never argue that there won’t be some enshittification but they’re undeniably creating very very very useful and sophisticated products that are already generating massive streams of revenue
English

This is quite literally praxis. People don't want fucking data centers, because no one actually USES the stupid fucking LLMs that you've been jerking off for weeks because some annoying dudes online disagreed with you about them.
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz
This type of stuff is just gonna keep escalating I think
English

@TaylorLorenz Nah I don't have an issue with you doing it for you, especially because once again, I really admire 90% of your work and have been very satisfied with being a patron before I went back to school, but to present excessive screen time as nothing to worry about esp for teens is wild
English

@xtracombatphase I don’t get the issue, me working 17 hours a day on a laptop screen and phone is not contributing anything meaningful to energy usage at all, like in any capacity?
English

@ChrisHarihar @TaylorLorenz me when im a lawyer so i spend all day doing crime. Shut the fuck up man
English

@TaylorLorenz @xtracombatphase DIGITAL JOURNALIST SPENDS TIME DOING DIGITAL SHIT
English

@TaylorLorenz Like I'm sorry I'm not a tech business guy, but like if I tried opening a coffee shop saying I need a decade of "growth" before I turn a profit, no one is giving me a business loan.
English

They’re not gonna break even bc they’re in a growth phase, but my point is that AI is widely popular and these are massive tech companies that aren’t going out of business anytime remotely soon. We should criticize these companies a lot, but let’s also not act like they haven’t created a product millions of users (both consumer and b2b) have determined to be very valuable. U know?

@emmmmuuuuuu I strive to be as authentically dumb as possible in all aspects of my life.
English

@xtracombatphase Are you usually this dumb or is it just this tweet?
English

@xtracombatphase People don't want data centers because they're linked to higher electricity costs, not because AI is less popular. I work in an area where we're actively blocking it and it's requested daily and widely. I know two fortune 100 companies that hired 20% less due to it.
English

@aestheticpriest I'll sacrifice the social media I spend a few hours on per week for the death of data centers.
English

@xtracombatphase bad news about the algorithms running everything you scroll and stream that also run out of the same data centers
English

@BadEgg991 They aren't. The most successful AI companies are breaking even.
English

@TaylorLorenz No I don't think it's immoral to make a living! Also, I love 99% of the output that your (what I would consider unhealthy, not immoral) work ethic produces. But comparing 17 hours of screen time to "a few extra minutes on a video game" is kind of hyperbolic, no?
English

@xtracombatphase Yeah I spend all day working from the min I wake up until I fall asleep. If the issue is that I work long hours then idk what to tell you! It’s not immoral to put in hours to make a living
English

@TaylorLorenz OK so that puts them at breaking even this year?
English

@xtracombatphase MAUs/DAUs are up across the board and Anthropic revenue just hit a $30 bn run rate, literally a 3x jump from four months ago. OpenAI’s revenue growth is slower bc they’ve focused on consumer rather than b2b (lots to unpack w their biz model) but AI is not a flash in the pan
