دونالد ترامپ، رئیس‌جمهوری آمریکا، پنجشنبه ۱۰ اردیبهشت در دفتر بیضی کاخ سفید به خبرنگاران گفت جمهوری اسلامی در ماه‌های اخیر ۴۲ هزار نفر از معترضان غیرمسلح را کشته است. او در پاسخ به انتقاد برخی ایرانیان تاکید کرد: «در تلاش هستم، به‌نوعی آن کشور را نجات بدهم.» او همچنین با اشاره به اعدام یک کشتی‌گیر معترض و هم‌تیمی‌هایش گفت این افراد به‌دلیل انتقاد از حکومت کشته شدند. رئیس‌جمهوری آمریکا در ادامه جمهوری اسلامی را «گروهی خشن» توصیف کرد و گفت: «ما آن‌ها را تضعیف کرده‌ایم و اقتصادشان در وضعیت فاجعه‌بار است.» او افزود: «باید دید تا چه مدت دوام می‌آورند.»
