On May 1st, millions of people across the country will make history in a day of no work, no school and no shopping to protest Trump’s war on our rights. Join the strike to take a stand against ICE terror and mass deportations! The Trump administration is just as committed as ever to ripping families apart. The people’s struggle in Minnesota forced them to back off of some tactics, but they are coming up with new, cruel ways to make life unbearable for our immigrant neighbors and force them out of the country. Just like the people in the Twin Cities showed, there’s nothing that can force ICE and Border Patrol to retreat like a general strike! Rather than hundreds of billions spent detaining and deporting people who work hard and contribute to our communities, these resources should be used to meet people’s needs in a society where everyone’s rights are respected.

Amid stalled contract negotiations, graduate workers at the University of Illinois Chicago went on strike Monday. The next day, the workers announced a series of International Workers’ Day events, endorsing the May 1 national shutdown. The UIC Graduate Employees Organization is demanding a living wage, healthcare coverage, sanctuary protections for international students, as well as guardrails on AI and proper credit for graduate researchers. The strike comes after a full year of attempts by the union to bargain with university administration.

Voting rights were built by generations of organizers and activists. From the Civil Rights Movement to Chicago’s own labor history, our power has always come from collective action. "May Day is not a moment. It's a movement." North Carolina teachers are preparing for a massive statewide walkout for their students on May 1 as part of the national shutdown. The action will launch their "Kids Over Corporations" campaign which demands fully funding the state's public schools, ending corporate tax breaks, eliminating private school vouchers, and lifting the ban on collective bargaining for public sector workers.
