@hansidisciple @8bdrssss The thing is, it does. It might look cute, and peaceful, but when an ideology is extremely patriarchal and deeply rooted in misogyny, these things find their way to the kids. You might mot see it, but it shapes their world view.
English

@6Dynamight6 @8bdrssss Ah okay then at least you’re morally consistent, fairs. I just think, having lived around many Muslims and Christians that transference of beliefs as long as it doesn’t affect anyone outside is fine. Liberty and all, you know?
English

why would you force a toddler to wear a hijab

@hansidisciple @8bdrssss What a weak “whataboutism”, Bro thinks I think Christianity is any better. My point stands for both of these religions. I don’t discriminate
English

@6Dynamight6 @8bdrssss Christianity has had the crusades, the President who claims to be a Christian is bombing numerous countries including girls schools in Iran, but sure.
English

@hansidisciple @8bdrssss You could argue the major world religion has cause more harm in the history of humanity to this very day than beating your kids.
English

@6Dynamight6 @8bdrssss There’s a stark difference between teaching your child a major world religion that billions follow and beating them…
English

@hansidisciple @8bdrssss You certainly can. You can also beat the hell out of your children. Doesn’t make it right does it?
English

@6Dynamight6 @8bdrssss So I can’t teach my own kid my religion?
English

@hansidisciple @8bdrssss Controlling to be protective is a bit different thatn forcing their own medieval ideology on a little kid that has a developing brain isnt it?
English

@8bdrssss Should parents be allowed to control their kids behavior to some extent during their childhood?

@evilpostmaker @Brilliand__ I agree with this entirely, and I completely understand why this could be a big reason why porn shouldnt be categorized as an addiction.
And I never wished it to be, only to acknowledge than porn on its own can be addictive and problematic.
English

@6Dynamight6 @Brilliand__ there's also a clear lack of withdrawal or tolerance patterns, which are very clear indicators of an addiction. and also a high prevalance without consistent impairment. by categorising porn as an addiction, we run the risk of pathologising normal variations in sexuality.
English

I have never seen anyone claiming to have a "porn addiction" that didn't have weird patriarchal ideas about sex. I feel like that alone is telling of whether "porn addiction" is real.
losing gray matter@oldheaded
It’s clearly, obviously real. But everyone wants to hinge acknowledging its existence along political lines. Social media addiction is real too. And video game addiction. Observable process addictions that people develop. They are distinct from any moral judgment of the behavior.
English

@evilpostmaker @Brilliand__ I was aware that it was not listed on DSM (many scholars agree that DSM is fairly outdated and needs to be updated). What I didn’t know was the reasoning why the academics are hesitant to list as an actual addiction, and looking into gave me insight
English

@Brilliand__ @6Dynamight6 they acknowledged they weren't aware porn addiction wasn't listed in the DSM, or widely considered an addiction by medical professionals, and thus i presented them with sufficient evidence to support my claim, satisfying the burden of proof.
English

@evilpostmaker @Brilliand__ Anyway, I urge you to take a look at these studies:
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24871202/
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25013940/
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18640924/
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24693354/
English

@6Dynamight6 @Brilliand__ i specifically avoid using words like "always" and "debunked" because as you've said, it's not entirely true. no science is entirely true, and i don't like to speak in absolutes. perhaps i should've clarified by using "typically" but i still stand by what i said.
English

@evilpostmaker @Brilliand__ I understand, but you did claim the data shows that there always has to be underlying sexual or psychiatric problems in order to manifest problematic porn consumption. Which isn’t entirely true, and I did call that out in other comments but you ignored them.
English

@Brilliand__ @6Dynamight6 but until that happens, i agree with the research & data that concludes that porn isn't an addiction. i'm open to changing my position, but until new evidence is revealed, it's a position that i'll reject
English

@evilpostmaker Also, the 'Supernormal Stimulus' theory shows that internet porn’s infinite novelty acts like a digital drug. It providesan artificial intensity the brain never evolved to handle, triggering dopamine surges that can rewire the reward system independently of any preexisting disorder
English

@6Dynamight6 sure, people can debate it, but until conclusive evidence can be shown that demonstrably proves it's an addiction, and not the result of a sexual or psychiatric disorder, then i simply reject the claim it's an addiction.
English

@evilpostmaker Addicts, where the brain is rewired to crave the stimulus regardless of whether an underlying disorder exists. You’re describing a coping mechanism; the data describes a neurobiological hijack
English

@6Dynamight6 again, the evidence overwhelmingly concludes that negative consumption of pornography is the result of a sexual or psychiatric disorder, not an addiction. i have no reason to believe otherwise unless compelling evidence is shown
English

@evilpostmaker If it were strictly a pre-existing psychiatric issue, we wouldn't see the brain physically restructuring itself in direct proportion to the usage hours. Furthermore, the University of Cambridge found that heavy users display the 'Incentive Salience' markers identical to drug-
English

@evilpostmaker After looking into it, you are correct that porn addiction is not yet categorized as an actual addiction, but it is unfair to say that has been “comprehensively” debunked as there is still ongoing debate about this.
English

@6Dynamight6 @Brilliand__ @idkijustthibk so in summary, no, it's not an addiction. if you want to continue to claim that it is, you'll now need to provide clinical evidence proving that to be the case.
English

@evilpostmaker Correct me if I’m wrong, but porn has been shown to actives the same ventral striatum and dopamine pathways seen in cocaine and gambling.
While my original claim was porn CAN be a stimulant that can kickstart addiction, I appreciate you bringing up the literature and,
English

@evilpostmaker @Brilliand__ @idkijustthibk It’s not as “comprehensively” as you claim it to be. Anything that can reward you without the necessary effort to achieve it, has potential to be addictive. Based on your argument, gambling addiction isn’t real either.
English

@6Dynamight6 @Brilliand__ @idkijustthibk you're correct in that addiction isn't always the result of substance abuse, you're incorrect in then concluding pornography can cause addiction. it doesn't, it's been ruled out pretty comprehensively by the medical community.
English

@Brilliand__ @evilpostmaker @idkijustthibk Addiction isn’t always towards a substance. Destructive behaviour counts as well. And porn CAN be a destructive compulsive behaviour, hence you can’t rule it out as an addiction
English

@evilpostmaker @6Dynamight6 @idkijustthibk Or rather, to prove that a particular case is a case of addiction.
"Porn is an addiction" is a category error. In all cases, it isn't the thing you're addicted to that is the addiction.
