@dunfermlinep But the town centre needs a bigger store - sad to know it’s all about retail parks as usual.

Hello, I’m a bat. I don’t drink blood, and I’m not trying to get tangled in your hair. If I accidentally fly into your home, please don’t strike me with sticks or brooms—it hurts, and I’m already frightened. I never meant to scare you. If I land, I might not be able to take off again without your help. Gently use a towel to guide me outside, and I’ll fly away at once. I help by eating mosquitoes and many other insects. But our roosts are disappearing as forests and old buildings are torn down, leaving us with fewer places to live. So if one of us enters your house, just switch off the lights inside, turn on a light outside, and open a door. I’ll find my way out quickly. Please show kindness—I want to live too. Bats are nature's silent heroes—let's protect them together. Share this and spread the word.

Since I became disabled I have been shocked at the state of accessible toilets in the UK. So many of them are absolutely disgusting. Nothing makes you feel less welcome as a disabled person than having to use neglected toilets, with sanitary bins overflowing with human waste. I’m often forced to take my waste with me, carrying it round in a rucksack and disposing of it at home. It’s heartbreaking and it happens a lot. Sadly, it’s very common. Venues across the UK simply don’t respect customers with disabilities and expect us to go to the toilet in repulsive surroundings. That’s why it’s such a treat when you go somewhere with an accessible loo that’s properly looked after. The Hyndland Rock in Glasgow has the best accessible toilet of any pub I’ve been in. It’s immaculate, smells fresh and even has a framed print on the wall. Art! In a disabled toilet! I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to find a toilet like this. It’s a massive relief and it makes me feel less sad about my situation. I’m an optimistic chap but when I’m catheterising myself or emptying my colostomy bag in a foul room full of flies, it doesn’t make me feel good about my life. So if you have a venue, please look after your accessible toilets. The basics are the most important thing: empty the bins and keep the room clean and free of junk. Those simple things really mean a lot to people like me. They’re not on X so I can’t tag them, but thank you to all the staff at The Hyndland Rock!

In the dark of winter, evergreen holly was believed to offer protection, not only against witches and wandering spirits, but against lightning itself 👻🌩️ In Scandinavia it was long observed that holly seemed untouched by lightning strikes, giving rise to the belief that it stood under the protection of Thor himself⚡ And while one need not dismiss the idea of divine guardianship, holly’s spiky leaves may also act as tiny conductors, helping to channel electrical energy safely from the air down into the earth 🍒❄️ This belief was not the sole preserve of the Norse and in Ireland and Britain too, holly planted around the home was thought to guard against lightning...and the devastating fires it so often brought with it 🔥

I won’t be on @absoluteradio for a few weeks as I’m having an operation on Thursday that will blow your mind. As a result of the life-saving spinal surgery I had two years ago, the nerves to my bladder and bowel were cut. This has left me with a stoma for solids and the need to self catheterise to pee. It also left me with something called stress incontinence. Lots of women experience it after childbirth. Whenever I laugh, cough or sneeze, piss comes out. And I’m a ticklish asthmatic with hay fever. I’m sodden. It’s costing me a fortune in Tena pants. So I’m having an artificial urinary sphincter implanted. This thing is GENIUS. It’s like a lassoo, which will wrap around my pee pipe and tighten it so that I don’t leak anymore. However, I’ll still need to catheterise in order to empty my bladder. So in order to loosen the lassoo, I press a button which deflates it and allows me to get a catheter down there. But where is this button going to go? In between my balls. Here are some pictures of it. On the left is the entire device. The middle photo shows the reservoir on the left. That will sit behind my abdominal wall. On the right is the lassoo (known as the cuff). That will wrap around the pipe and inflate with fluid to tighten it. The final photo shows the button. That will sit in between my balls. Inside the bag. When it’s time to pee, I press that. (Once I can pin it down. It’s going to be like finding a penny in a bag of mozzarella). The button then deflates the cuffs by moving the liquid to the reservoir. Afterwards, the cuff will reinflate with water and tighten up again. So I’ll be off for a bit while I heal. The nurse told me ‘for 8 weeks it’ll feel like someone has smashed you in the balls with a hammer’. And she hadn’t seen Forest this season.

“It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart.
