For those who don't know. Local government (council) are not recognised in our constitution, nor do they hold any powers to make laws, in fact, Australians voted against having councils period. The Referendum was as follows The Constitution Alteration (Local Government) Bill 1988,[1] was an unsuccessful proposal to alter the Australian Constitution to recognise local government. It was put to voters for approval in a referendum held on 3 September 1988. The structure of the Constitution recognises government at federal and state levels, but makes no mention of local government. The Question A Proposed Law: To alter the Constitution to recognise local government. Do you approve this proposed alteration? The proposal was to add a new provision to the Constitution as follows :[2] 119A. Each State shall provide for the establishment and continuance of a system of local government, with local government bodies elected in accordance with the laws of the State and empowered to administer, and to make by-laws for, their respective areas in accordance with the laws of the State. 66.39% voted NO Why do councils still exist? How is it councils can make by-laws and wield the power they do when they are illegitimate?

Today’s random thought… Who else would like to see the ATO provide them a breakdown of how the government spent their tax contribution every year? So when you receive your tax return, the government provides a function-and-department breakdown of how much you individually funded these major government functions like defence (including AUKUS), pensions, jobseeker, the ABC and SBS, and so forth? Adding a per dollar indicator of economic activity derived would also be fascinating (I’ve been told Defence estimates 60c of economic return per dollar they spend, and are proud it’s so high - bizarrely.) I think would be very interesting, @AlboMP.
