@annakhachiyan Anna from Red Scare's social/cultural takes are very good. Unfortunate her political takes are so atrocious.

Boomer women are just like any other women in that they need constant around-the-clock attention. A lot of them are probably also lonely and undersocialized due to shrinking pool of friends with age and family sizes not being what they used to be. They’re also for the most part incapable of being direct, which they experience as aggression, so they express themselves in a very roundabout, passive aggressive way hoping you’ll notice. Posting your thoughts on Twitter as we all do isn’t really that much different is it?
Romy@Romy_Holland

i understand why ppl do small talk when they are first meeting someone, but why do some ppl do compulsive small talk all the time? my MIL just by default talks nonstop. “do you think all of that will fit in that suitcase? i always check my suitcase, don’t want to be lifting it on the plane. i take it to the gate and check it there. they let you check it for free!” “uber is here! last time i took an uber it was a prius. hard to get ubers at my house, have to call ahead.” “i talked to margaret. did i tell you that? she called me. she’s getting ready to go to the airport. 2pm fight for her. but she’s flying domestic. gets in in the evening.” but like basically nonstop for hours. never anything that needs to be said, always just kinda autobiographical and impossible to respond to with anything other than “mmmm.” it is very much the same as someone following me around with a television playing nonstop ads, but if i don’t kinda pay attention to the ads i am rude. not only can i now not have a normal conversation with my fiancé, i cannot even have interesting thoughts in my own mind.

@nazzobetweeting or you could spend 15 minutes on a bike, have a lovely time and get a view of the skyline and some fresh air and a little workout! Taking subways in NYC if you aren't commuting is for suckers. Biking rules. Get with it!

@Donappel1Don @BriannaWu 2. I'm not clear that Cornacchia is an anti-semite. I haven't done a deep dive, but suggesting israel might have been behind the killing of JFK isn't anti-semitic, its a legitimate theory, lend credulity by Israel's long history of assassinations. Is there anything else here?

I want to take this in good faith. I think Matthew and I are starting from the same core principle. We want Democrats to win because we see Trump as a real threat to the country. And we both want less rigidity and more compromise in how Democrats operate politically. Where we diverge is the moral calculus. I think he’s landing on the idea that if Jewish groups let this tattoo go in order to secure more Democratic power in the Senate, that’s a net win. I don’t agree. I think I’m taking a longer view of the party. Can Democrats win in five years if we keep alienating Jewish voters? I don’t think so. And I don’t think the reasons Jews are upset right now are unreasonable. Yes, it’s a relatively small voting bloc. But anyone who’s worked on a campaign or done fundraising understands how important this network is. Canvassing, phone banking, legal support. These are high impact contributors to Democratic infrastructure. If Jewish voters shift meaningfully toward Republicans, the party is significantly weaker. Full stop. I think Matthew and I would probably agree that the current strategy for fighting antisemitism isn’t working. There is some value in calling it out and shaming it, but that is reactive. It is firefighting. The deeper issue is the information warfare being waged around Israel, and there is no coherent, effective counter strategy from major Jewish organizations. On the tattoo itself, I think the reaction is entirely reasonable. If a Democratic candidate had an Elliot Rodger tattoo, women would expect the party to replace that candidate. If someone had a Matthew Shepard torture reference tattooed on them, LGBT voters would expect the same. This is worse. It is directly tied to imagery used by people who organized and carried out the Holocaust. Making a voter base feel heard and respected is basic political competence. And right now, I think the Democratic Party is failing to do that with Jews.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

@CharlesFLehman Gotcha. That makes sense, intense focus on the tattoos is basically in line with the ongoing meltdown of the American Jewish establishment’s ability to engage in politics constructively as the overall situation gets worse and worse.

@Donappel1Don @BriannaWu 5. The full quote from 2014 is "From a strictly professional standpoint, this was a damn fine looking and successful raid against a superior opponent, I dig it"." He was being an edgelord online, but this is not anti-semitic. He's commenting on the tactical aspects.

@Donappel1Don @BriannaWu 4. Anti israel rhetoric. Being anti-israel is not antisemitic. I am jewish, and I plan to make a bunch of little jews soon, and I do not like israel. This does not make me a self-hating jew.

So glad I gave up on Democrats. Graham Platner, their candidate for the Senate in Maine: - SS chest tattoo - Endorsed political violence - Endorsed Hamas - Called white, rural Mainers stupid - Called Jesus a “zombie” and the Virgin Mary a “skank” - Defended urinating on corpses But sure they just want Abundance and healthcare bro.

@Donappel1Don @BriannaWu You do realize that the shirtless pictures of platner are from his brother's wedding, which is to a jewish woman! Imagine being such an anti-semite that becoming family with a jew makes you get naked and sing in front of everyone. A Shanda, my grandma would say.

@BriannaWu you are mistaken in thinking that these vocal jewish organizations coming out against Platner actually represent jewish voters as a whole. I'm jewish and myself and my whole family (also jewish) are backing Platner because we want HEALTHCARE. btw, maine is 1% jewish lol

What is the upshot of the Platner tattoo discourse? Let's say I find his story fishy. I'm supposed to worry that this seemingly left-wing guy supported by all the left-wing people is secretly a Nazi just pretending to be a progressive populist?

@lackboys3 Many Americans have said and done things they now regret. In fact it’s sort of the human condition. It makes platner more relatable.

Who among us hasn’t gone through a “really rough period”, then gotten Nazi tattoos, denigrated blacks, Jews & women, joked about rape & blamed victims, lied about his service record, gleefully gone on antisemitic podcasts? This happens all the time, doesn’t it?

@BCityEnjoyer @HistoryBoomer The post was about being single and needing 150k. Kids are a different story. Although- I live in a bugger city that NYC (Osaka Japan) and I am married with a teenager and we make far less than 150k USD (as does almost everyone I know) and we are fine.

Some of this disconnect may be liquor. If you’re a person who needs to hit an upscale bar with friends and buy three drinks, yeah, that’ll raise your bills pretty fast. I’m a frugal guy. Besides books and travel, I don’t spend much. I’m a rare drinker.
Carl@HistoryBoomer

What planet do these people live on? You don’t need 150k in NYC! I’m a single dude and I make appreciably less than 150k and I live pretty comfortably. I go out to eat. I take trips abroad. And I save money for my retirement. What fricking studies are you looking at???
