@politicalmath I found it awful and useless for anything except the memes.

My teens wanted to watch a horror movie so we watched The Shining, which sent me down a rabbit trail
Critics *hated* The Shining when it was released. Siskel gave it 2 stars. Variety said Kubrick "destroyed all that was so terrifying about the King novel". One critic called it "Shallow, self-conscious, and dull. Read the book".
Kubrick was nominated for "Worst Director" at the first Razzie awards
I find all of this insane. In imdb, The Shining is rated as one of the top 100 movies of all time. It is seared into our collective memory with "all work and no play" and "Here's Johnny" and "red rum".
Somehow Kubrick made a horror movie that every "smart" person hated when it came out and yet endured as one of the great movies of all time. How do you do that?

@AndrewPollackFL Honestly, in their heart of hearts, the part of them that may still have a conscience and guilt, the celebrities themselves must be hoping none of us accepts their baloney.

@ThomasSowell Uh, he was one of the worst pushers of this thing. Glad he's slightly more honest now, but better off earlier.

This will put it into sickening perspective:
The bipartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigates fraud and improper payments in federal programs. It estimates that the U.S. government loses between $233 billion and $521 billion annually just to fraud.
Facts:
Personal taxpayers making under $94,440 cumulatively pay ~$236 billion in personal income taxes. This represents the bottom 75% of taxpayers.
Personal taxpayers making under $169,800 cumulatively pay ~$531 billion in personal income taxes. This represents the bottom 90% of total taxpayers.
So, the income taxes 75% to 90% of Americans are paying… are routed directly to fraud.

@Fair_and_Biased Tbh, it's been like this in Hollywood and society for a long time.

Isaac from Daily Disciple nails it.
Progressivism treats male friendship as a pretext for romance.
Naturally, a show like Stranger Things MUST create a gay infatuation btw friends, and even the story of David & Jonathon is rewritten.
“We’re given a clear message: male friendships are either toxically masculine or straight up gay.
So much of modern media presents a close male friendship as just a stepping stone for that one character to truly discover their sexuality by season 3.”

@eric_j_thompson Jj has been absolutely horrendous besides one quarter. When can people acknowledge that as a fact?

@TheDonStein @GrigulisSylvia @JamesDaleWilso6 @revcjackson @timrwild Yes, clumsy is the word. The Gospel determines the Call, not tape. The Word is unbroken. The ELS is good and helpful, and 20 years ago we listened and our CICR talks with them. Certain spirits push boundaries. Maybe you're familiar with that in your synod?
English

@BodeRev @GrigulisSylvia @JamesDaleWilso6 @revcjackson @timrwild If the Office is merely a collection of functions taped together with shoestring and the traditional sense of “a man exercising spiritual authority both over men and women,” then it is fenced only by the Order of Creation. In a broken world, that Order is challenged daily. 2/2

What's funny about this post is that it is entirely permissible under WELS doctrine for women to preside over the Sacrament, and they have actually done so. In one of the most Upper Midwest moves ever, WELS enacted a "let's not even talk about this issue" policy when the ELS objected to the practice. (Good for the ELS, which is quite a gem of church body in many ways.) WELS put an end to the practice, but also decided they weren't going to discuss it. It remains an unresolved issue for them, with no plans to ever resolve it, as far as I know.
Moreover, when you dig into their theology of ministry, it is entirely possible to have female pastors. There is no "Office of the Holy Ministry" for pastors - there's just "ministry," and they define "pastors" as those who most fully exercise ministry. But, they don't believe that the office of pastor is, per se, a biblical one.
Because of this, it's entirely possible for them to simply define "pastor" any way they want. What's to keep them from calling a woman dedicated simply to ministering to other women "pastor"? Nothing, really, except for custom.
And, the honest WELS folk admit to this.
The WELS doctrine of ministry is much closer to the American Evangelical conception of ministry by which that young woman at CTX was called "pastor." And, CTX doesn't consider itself a part of Synod anyways, anymore.
In one of the funnier twists, it's within the realm of possibility that the WELS begin having female pastors that cannot vote in their congregations.
Finally, don't get me started about what WELS actually looks like on the ground. As one who serves in the WELS heartland, I can start down a whooooooole laundry list of eyebrow raising stuff.
English

@GrigulisSylvia @JamesDaleWilso6 @TheDonStein @revcjackson @timrwild We have a doctrine called the order of creation. Adam was formed first, then Eve. It's a bit more than custom. It's a scriptural hermeneutic. Saying the WELS is close to women pastors is silly.
Granted, I've never served in the state of Wisc, where some of these dogfights are.
English

@GrigulisSylvia @JamesDaleWilso6 @TheDonStein @revcjackson @timrwild A LCMS pastor is claiming that WELS will soon have women pastors, but they won't be allowed to vote. Funny, because I am not even a voter. I am ex officio on committees and council.
I don't think these guys actually care about WELS Christians. They just like having ammo for X.

@dalepartridge Historically speaking, it's not easy to get bloodline Jews to be actually bloodline Jews. Were not nearly all of them destroyed by A.D. 70?
