Just had to look this up on Grok. The total cost of the Japanese rail system is, inflation adjusted, roughly $300b and that covers 19,000 miles. The high speed rail system they have covers 3,000 miles and that cost ~$80b, and that’s included in the $300b. And Japan’s high speed rail system is an incredible feat of technology and customer experience. These guys 👇🏼 are talking about spending $126b to build 500 miles between SF and LA. Even if I am wrong by 2x, the implications on their governance, building/construction competencies and even benchmarking processes are staggering.
