As ‘Low Expectations’ are in the air again, here’s a polemic I wrote about origins of ‘the soft bigotry of low expectations’ soundbite a decade ago. Whilst some things have changed, I’d still argue that ‘low expectations’ is unhelpful sleight of hand… icingonthecakeblog.weebly.com/blog/attacking…

Spot on from Adam. <Applies hard hat to head> And it was a point Martyn made in his speech to ASCL last week: the report card recognises the progress being made by schools, without masking where more is needed.

I've seen a few of these now, where achievement is ranked lower than...all the things that cause achievement (behaviour, curriculum, etc) I understand how that happens but a lot of teachers and leaders will look at it and say "nah doesn't make sense"

Happy #bookmarkMonday 🥳. A no-brainer for this week is @adamboxer1's short blog 👇 An easy, great read about the sunk-cost fallacy that we all have to lean into sometimes, no matter how good a school leader we think we might be. In education there are fads, old ideas gift-wrapped as new ones and just the wrong choices. Know the best bets and implement them until you're blue in the face! #we❤️EEF Thanks, Adam

So, we've plenty of data in for secondary reports. I have been tweeting away my observations and comparing the awarded achievement grades against a model I wrote using publicly available data and the final version of the toolkits.

Come along to the Databusting event we're hosting with @InsightHQ @Databusting @jpembroke
Cass & Anna - The Educakers@theeducakers

We're really excited to announce that @InsightHQ @jpembroke @Databusting will be running their 'Databusting Surrey with the Educakers' event with us in June. Have a look at the link below for more information. We'd love to meet so many of you in person! eventbrite.co.uk/e/databusting-… A practical one-day workshop for primary and MAT senior leaders on making assessment and data work in practice, without adding to workload. With the introduction of the new Ofsted toolkit and a revised IDSR, schools and trusts are under increasing pressure to demonstrate how assessment and data support inclusion, particularly for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND. This practical one-day workshop provides time and space to step back and consider how assessment and data can be managed effectively, without adding unnecessary workload. Aimed at senior leaders, the day focuses on practical, realistic approaches to assessment and data that support teachers, strengthen provision and inform improvement.

How would I improve the inspection toolkits? Some things I would tweak but they are ok on the whole. The key issue is the secure fit rather than best fit approach. Something HMCI and Ofsted have said is designed to improve consistency.

Really excited about our new CPD tool using @trello and building in the core @WALKTHRUs_5 techniques that we have chosen to enact @teacherhead's Rosenshine's Principles. As subscribers to the Walkthrus platform, we can now go straight to the slidedeck by clicking on the relevant tile and use this for bespoke CPD to ensure alignment and consistency across our school. Integrating this into Trello, matches all our other school improvement work, helps document teachers' strengths in practice live and in the moment and comment in a collaborative and transparent way across the team. Plus, it's great value for money! If you have not checked out the Walkthrus platform, I'd highly recommend it. Happy Wednesday! Cass @LisaWorgan @olicav @MattTeachCoach

On the train home from a school visit. Reading Ofsted secondary reports from yesterday's tranche of publications. Read this achievement comment - what achievement grade (expected or strong) do we think is the best description of the school's work?
