Brian Buchanan of North Carolina was sentenced to over a year in prison for his involvement in a group engaged in refund fraud. This type of fraud occurs when a purchaser claims to return an item, receives a refund, but keeps the product. The group employed various tactics to carry out refund fraud, including social engineering to manipulate customer services representatives and recruiting other representatives as “insiders” to process refunds on the conspiracy’s behalf. Buchanan is the eighth member of “Noir’s Luxury Refunds,” a Telegram channel, to be sentenced for fraudulent activity. justice.gov/usao-ndal/pr/m…

Two American cybersecurity professionals were each sentenced to four years in prison for deploying ransomware against multiple U.S. victims in 2023. Ryan Goldberg and Kevin Martin agreed to pay ALPHV BlackCat ransomware administrators a 20% share of any ransoms received in exchange for access to their ransomware and extortion platform. Both men worked in the cybersecurity industry and leveraged their technical skills and knowledge to extort victims. CASE UPDATE from @FBICleveland: 25 Defendants Convicted in International $215M Scam That Targeted 1,000+ Victims According to evidence presented in court, individuals, businesses, and other organizations in the U.S., were targeted and hacked by Nigerian-linked fraud organizations that defrauded more than 1,000 victims out of approximately $215 million. The scheme spanned 47 states and 19 countries. Cyber threat actors are using sophisticated, cyber-enabled tactics to impersonate legitimate businesses to hijack freight, steal high-value shipments, and reroute deliveries, resulting in a surge in strategic cargo theft. The threat actors target US transportation and logistics sectors, gaining unauthorized access to computer systems via spoofed emails, fake URLs, and compromised carrier accounts. In 2025, estimated cargo theft losses in the US and Canada surged to nearly $725 million, a 60% increase from 2024. #OTD 90 years ago, former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover personally arrested notorious gangster Alvin Karpis, aka "Public Enemy Number One." Karpis led a life of crime, but as the brains of the Barker/Karpis Gang, he remained elusive to law enforcement until April 1936, when word came that "Old Creepy" was in New Orleans. Hoover flew overnight to join the raid team, and they sketched out an arrest plan on a chalkboard. Once in custody, Hoover escorted Karpis to Minnesota to face kidnapping charges.
