@wokekenzie thinks Firestone is ready for a facelift. It's featuring all of his favorite things... Not a single tree left standing.

I have gone back and forth a few times about the idea of restoring Pebble to its imitation dunes phase... I'm back on board!

@wokekenzie pretty cool, right? Let me know your favorite golf course and I'll show you how it can be improved with extensive tree clearing, short grass, natural bunkers, and some Raynor templates. Woke AI golf architecture is the next great frontier.

@gcamagazine If only there was a 9 hole short course built a few years ago named "The Loop".... Or a Top 100 public course built by Tom Doak.... have we run out of names for things?

@thempspec @KYGolfHoles I believe this was dated to 1919 and those trees were still there in 1938. The large scale tree planting happened much later. The removal of trees right of #12 was a big mistake and opened up long views and road noise from the turnpike.

Would Oakmont not be more aesthetically pleasing if it had left say, four or five, big oak trees scattered about the property in open space areas? Just for scale and reference and the sheer beauty of an old enormous tree? Genuine question. It’s not a linksland property, rather between a mountain ridge and straddling an interstate. Wouldn’t it suit the character more? Again, not in play, but on the grounds. Please don’t stone me.

@BPBlackMetal His argument was that he got tired of playing 18 wild greens, not his cup of tea. Seems like he could even handle half of them. It's a fair critique, if true. I'm unfamiliar with the course, but I also agree. Too many wild greens is not a great thing, variety rules the day.

This thread perhaps touches on a concept few consider in course design…if you’re facing something that seems unfair, like a quadruple-breaker, you may have landed on a green when the wise move was to lay up. GIRs feel good but can also be a bad idea at courses like La Belle.
Lincoln Slagel@incolnlay

I love interesting greens. This was too much. The first few holes, I was in love. They were a blast. Running pitches off ridges & quadruple breaking putts are great, but not for 18 holes nonstop. By the end of the front nine, I was excited to play more. By 12, it was enough. 2/x

@JosephLaMagna @fried_egg_golf is this a bit? the ball is 100 percent underground from this angle, no doubt an animal hole and completely unplayable. What am I missing?

It's been more than 15 years since the Recession and real estate developers are still forcing tortured, unwalkable routings onto new golf courses.

Got wind that Ian Andrew has submitted a long-rollout master plan for Cleveland's Sleepy Hollow..."it’s probably 10 years of tree removal before anything else might happen." I'll see if I can find out more...but even such a conservative timeline is no small thing!
