Platner's significance is hardly limited to Maine. It's that Platner, with the other DSA-aligned thugs and radicals tunneling their way into the Democratic orbit, marks a sort of Rubicon. Some Democrats are crossing it; others are thinking twice; a chasm is opening up; and a conversation, one that has been percolating up out of the embers of a broken and mostly forgotten liberalism, is starting, however tentatively, to take place.
This conversation will stretch across several election cycles. It will be messier, one suspects, than the mess that has engulfed the Republican Party.
But it must happen if Democrats are to become a serious party again, so, in this respect, Platner is a force for good. Not in the way he imagines, but still.

Never before have I witnessed anything expose the left quite like this Platner controversy has. Platner is everything they’ve ever accused Trump of being but with a (D) after his name, and they’re twisting themselves into a pretzel trying to cover his ass so he can get elected over the most moderate, inoffensive Republican in the senate. I’ve suspected for years that much of the left’s outrage towards Trump’s demeanor was exaggerated or even outright faked for political expediency, and this was the final piece that confirms it.
