The American Society of Criminology conference is next week and this is your annual reminder that most of the presentations will likely be 💩 Here are some ways to be less 💩 jerryratcliffe.net/post/i-want-a-…

@Jerry_Ratcliffe I do agree with you about the quality of the presentations though. As a colleague of mine says, all you need is a heartbeat and a checkbook.

@Jerry_Ratcliffe Can you think of a time when LE lowered its standards and it ended up being a good thing? 🤔

New Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent training to go from 18 weeks to 8 weeks, and dropping the degree requirement? If the plan is to make the FBI a laughing stock, this is the way to do it. nytimes.com/2025/08/21/us/…

Very disappointing, but not altogether surprising given other actions taken by the current administration at NIH, CDC, etc.

@KellyMSocia Chatgpt just generates text, it doesn't look for citations, as far as I know. Every "citation" I've seen from it is entirely made up. Were there valid citations in this paper?

Some news. Really excited to be recognized with the early career award from @ASCPolicing this year. Even better - Geoff Alpert has also been awarded the distinguished career award. Super cool to be able to share that night with my academic hero and mentor. Here’s to many more years of my dream job working with the amazing coauthors who continue to push me every day!
Scott@smourtgos

Big congrats to @ian_t_adams for being selected as the @ASCPolicing early career award winner. I can’t think of anyone more deserving, and the scary part is he has endless more good work coming out soon! 👀 @UofSC_Crim

@lonecrim You'll spend a lot time on making edits and other revisions/suggestions, and some students will ignore them or not care.

Two professor friends at Georgetown make a case for allowing students to work towards mastery on writing assignments, w/ open ended invitation for R&R. Wondering if that will work at my not terribly selective school. Can see it working and really not working too.

@DrLauraHuey In terms of gaps, I can put together something fairly quickly on either rural policing or IA units.

Tossing an idea out there for the 2024 issues: looking for *HIGH QUALITY* qualitative articles, commentaries, systematic reviews, and/or state of the art reviews from researchers/practitioners for @police_practice . Flexible word count. Any interest?

@AdamPlantinga A lot are quite intense with how long they are. I’ve been combing through these manuals that are publicly available (a lot are) for the largest 100 municipal PDs lately.

Most large police agencies have a Rules & Regulations manual that is thicker than an old phone book. My department's is nearly 700 pages long. Pretty sure I'm violating at least a minor reg right now even though I'm off-duty at home in unassuming sweatpants.

Kicking off our randomized controlled trial of field training officers in the first of three police departments. FTOs are so critical to officer training and setting the stage for their careers, but often overlooked in research. Excited for this project.
