@lydiakauppi I'm not sure how powerful it is in the US.
I was in Catholic education ages 6-23 and as a kid 95% of my social world was Catholic, but lots of my friends / classmates mostly ignored it and don't seem to have been influenced by it much.
English

This is why I argue Catholicism is an ethnoreligion like Judaism and Islam. If you were born Catholic, you’re never not Catholic even if you’re not Catholic

@henribergson666 @pigeon_clown I see your point, esp. re: calculating cost of living. I spoke too strongly before.
English

@HanJerak @pigeon_clown yeah that’s a big challenge, a challenge that u can approach by pointing out disparities b/w cost of living calculations & current wage, or looking to what other employers pay for comparable positions. that’s why it seems bizarre to me to argue against wanting more pay. i don’t /
English

@henribergson666 @pigeon_clown I just don't see the connection.
In my experience, the challenge is trying to get your BU united and willing to do actions.
The employer will always cry poverty, most BU members will never be satisfied with the raises you get. But as a rep you have to admit there are limits.
English

@henribergson666 @pigeon_clown This perennial Twitter debate has nothing to do with collective bargaining.
English

@pigeon_clown as a one off i wouldn’t care but as a pattern i find it frustrating, esp from putatively ‘leftist’ accts. not a good habit for the bargaining room!

@LiquidatedCake @feraljokes The source of that study is a company trying to sell you financial advisors and other services. Makes sense they'd want to make an upper-middle-class perosn feel anxious. smartasset.com/data-studies/m…

@ckayerawlings When I hit $70k two years ago I was fine here in NYC. Not saving a ton, but fine.
This all depends on circumstances of course. I am single and childless, pay $1600/m rent, no health insurance premiums, student loans are all paid off and I have no other debt, I love beans...
English

@dbessner @DavidKlion This reminds me of when rich people say "comfortable" to mean $65k/year private hs, vacation home, trips abroad, etc.
English

@DavidKlion According to this study the median NYC income is HALF what a single adult needs to live comfortably in the city so I don’t see where Courtney is wrong smartasset.com/data-studies/s…

The class nuances of this debate, which also came up with a recent n+1 job, pit two distinct snobberies against each other:
-PMCs with family money who can live in comfort longterm on a median NYC salary vs
-less rich PMCs who think making a median NYC salary is literal poverty

@rosemarieho_ I read that wfh as being on an ad hoc basis. But as for the rest, I'll take your word for it. Thank you for the perspective.

Wilfredo is 10 years old. Last week, he represented himself in immigration court. His mother, Nexoli, was detained in Houston and has been locked up and away from her son since December. Now, DHS wants to send him to Ecuador—a place he has never been and knows no one. Nexoli has a work permit and was trying to do everything the right way. ICE must release her and stop its case to deport Wilfredo immediately. He should be treated like a kid—not a criminal.

#Jeopardy champion Jamie Ding slams ICE after his 31-day winning streak ends and says "I hope that immigrants can be seen in a positive light" under Trump's federal government.
“I kept hearing how [my run] was bringing people together, and I love that very much. I’ve heard people say, ‘It’s nice to have something positive on TV!’ As an immigrant and a person of color, I was able to become part of the history of an American institution. ‘Jeopardy!’ really is an institution and America’s turning 250 years old and the federal government is going after immigrants in a way unlike anything that we’ve seen in the recent past. So I hope that immigrants can be seen in a positive light too.” (via People)

In the 1990s the CIA gave funding to the Iowa TV writers workshop to make sure prestige television dramas leaned away from broader systemic critiques to stay hyperfocused on dark, male anti-heroes, keeping a generation of largely male viewers trapped in individualist fantasies.
