Blessed Feast of St. Scholastica! Did you know that St. Scholastica once prevented St. Benedict, her twin brother, from leaving by praying for a storm? Annie Mitchell shared the beautiful story in last night's pre-class. #Catholic

"Nothing other than you, Lord." This was St. Thomas Aquinas' response when Christ asked what reward he desired for his theological work. Dr. Jared Staudt on St. Thomas Aquinas—the Dominican friar who showed us that faith and reason lead to the same truth: Christ. #Catholic

@Manhattva @stackerco And yet, it inspired St Anthony, whose feast day we're celebrating today, to become a hermit and then the father of monks and the monastery movement. One that bear fruit to this day. in fact @InstituteCC will soon offer a video presentation of the rules by Augustine, Basil

What Paul said vs What Jesus said when asked how to achieve salvation: ➡️ Paul. Acts 16:30–31 “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Paul’s answer: Believe in Jesus ➡️ Jesus. Matthew 19:16–17, 21 “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “…If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments … go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” Jesus’ answer: Keep the commandments, sell possessions and give to the poor, follow him.

"When the same Father Anthony meditated on the depth of the judgment of God, he asked, “Lord, how is it that some die when they are young, while others drag on to extreme old age? And why are some poor and others rich? Why do wicked people prosper and why are the just in need? He heard a voice answering him, “Anthony, keep your attention on yourself; these things are according to the judgment of God, and it is not to your benefit to know anything about them." – from the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. Today, 17 January, is the feast of the Father of Monasticism, St Anthony of Egypt. flic.kr/p/2rSgBxx This beautiful medieval fresco of St Anthony is in Orvieto Cathedral.

One day, on his way to church St. Anthony heard the Gospel: "go, sell all you have, give the money to the poor... come & follow me." He took it as a sign from God & gave up everything to live with Christ in the desert, attracting many who wanted the same way of life.

"What good work shall I do?" St. Antony replied: "All works are not equal. Abraham was hospitable &God was with him. Elijah loved quiet & God was with him. David was humble & God was with him. What your soul desires in following God, that do & keep your heart." 🧵 #Catholic

Next Thursday, Jan. 22, will mark the 53rd anniversary of the ill-fated 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States at the federal level and paved the way for the violent deaths of millions of unborn children and causing deep, life-long trauma to countless mothers. We are blessed to have in our city and in our state many programs and initiatives already in place that reach out to mothers and their children: Walking with Moms in Need, Women’s Care Center, Birthright, the Nebraska Pregnancy Care Alliance, and St. Gianna’s, Hearts Restored (post-abortion healing), just to name a few. Today, I am excited to announce a new initiative called Mater Filius (Mater Filius is Latin for Mother and Child). Mater Filius is a maternity home that provides a tranquil, safe and family-like setting for pregnant mothers in need. It is my hope and prayer that Mater Filius will build upon the other wonderful pro-life ministries we have in our diocese and in our state, to grow and deepen a culture of life and a civilization of love so that, one day, abortion will not only be illegal, it will be unthinkable! Tomorrow: @ccpecknold returns for an exploration of Augustine's City of God When Rome fell, pagans blamed Christians for the empire's collapse. Augustine's response became one of the greatest works in Western civilization. #Catholic
