Economic bubbles throughout history tend to follow similar patterns, but they are never exactly the same. In 1929 and 2008, there was a lot of debt — but most of it was owned by the private sector. Today, the government sector has a lot of the debt. Still, one man’s debts are another man’s assets. And when the bill comes due and the debt assets aren’t as appealing as the alternatives, some sort of monetization is inevitable. I recently sat down with CNBC's @andrewrsorkin to discuss this in the context of his latest book, 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History — and How It Shattered a Nation. The parallels between that era and now are striking.

Must be a slow news day…China is unlikely to invade due to pressing domestic challenges. Further economic isolation would destabilize its economy, risking significant social unrest and escalating internal security issues. Creating a geopolitical crisis is not a viable option for them.

Hey Tom, maybe but where is Canada going to get its robotics and GPUs from? And when it discovers a large hostile underwater drilling and mining operation in its sovereign waters or northern lands...and by attacked it, would be a declared art of war...what then? Nato? The UN? The WTO? How long would it take to completely stripped the resources and pollute the lands from reckless, rapid mining before they depart with everything? That would put Canada into a terrible bargaining position for any help it needs from Nato or the US. If Canada doesn't shore up, expand its territorial presence and defence, there will be squatters that don't care about the international kangaroo courts. This is why both nations need each other. A future based trade union that unlocks massive benefits.

It will have its challenges. It’s fine when times are good but we will see how it adapts in the bad times. When too big to fail meets too slow to move. As debts levels continue to rise, the wealthier components will start to bristle at the underperforming nations and their voice in setting policies. This will test the EUs ability to evolve.

@KenFZill @kelley_ranch You may be right, time will tell. By their profiles, Carney is a big picture thinker and so is Trump. They’re both dealmakers. And they both want their tenures to be the greatest ever. There will be a trade deal. And if it’s anything like this, things will get better…fast.

@InvitasCo @kelley_ranch Publicly respecting Carney yet disrespecting Poilievre when Canada was already dumping Trudeau will become Trump's biggest Presidential mistake. Every country is better off having strong rather than weak Allies. Canada is IMO willfully failing at every topic.

Hey Richard, you might be right, but here are some thoughts. About 75% of goods are still flowing tariff-free. The world has changed a lot since Trump’s last term, so it’s natural for any administration, regardless of party, to revisit strategic trade items. There’s a reason why these items are up for renegotiation: they’re the pivot point for a much broader discussion and opportunity for both countries. This is the theatre before the real deal. Bet on their need for legacy and performance, if they pull this off, they’ll be remembered as some of the greatest leaders in history, the ones who ushered in a new age of prosperity. Everything we know is about to change. Nice to meet you, by the way!

Yeh, everyone is a bit out of their minds these days. The world is a five alarm dumpster fire. Covid, media and social media really messed up the social dynamics. But when things hit these extremes, history always marks it as a turning point. If we all remember that our manners define who we are…it’s ok for others to have different POVs…and we all get our chance to be an idiot and it’s more divine to forgive than hate…we will get a better place super fast.

@InvitasCo I just listened to an angry illogical rant from one of my brothers in Canada. I don't know how seriously to take him because he is openly liberal but secretly very conservative. He offered no facts just insults and opinions.

Oh, AI can be far more disruptive than that. You’re raising a critical point, the wealth gap is already widening, and AI and robotics could accelerate it dramatically. When nearly every job becomes automatable, the entire economic model will need to change. How do you support citizens who no longer have traditional employment? It all comes down to how money flows. That will define the next-generation economic systems. Citizens are taxpayers, and taxpayer money is currently funding the development of these powerful new technologies. Both countries should be investing heavily in these private industries, not just to build capability, but to ensure those investments generate returns for the public. Citizens deserve dividends from the value they helped create. If Canada and the U.S. become the world’s self-sustaining manufacturing hubs, smart deployment of taxpayer capital could make their citizens the wealthiest on the planet. Steven thanks again for sharing.

@kvasoftpllc @InvitasCo So far, from what I’ve seen, AI is used to create photos of people to either make them look better or worse. I actually hope that AI can make a better world, not one where 2-3 monopolies control global finance.

Hi Rock, Canada leans more center-left these days (more left than usual) but there’s still a major deal to be made here. Both countries lost their core manufacturing base due to labor costs. But that old thinking no longer applies. With robotics, the work can now be done faster, cheaper, and smarter. What matters now is access to cheap energy, resources, raw materials, ports, and infrastructure, and that’s where Canada and the U.S. are perfectly complementary. Together, both countries can regain a massive economic capability they once lost. They can generate new revenue streams and unlock higher returns by supplying finished products, not just raw inputs. It’s an incredible opportunity, regardless of political leanings. No politician or administration will walk away from a chance to make history. Trump and Carney, now have the rare opportunity to truly shape the future. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts. Appreciate it.

@InvitasCo I think Canada will let their economy die before they abandon their protectionism. They think the USA is bigger and wealthier than they, and is obliged to support them.

Hey Kelley, love your positivity. That’s just Trump’s negotiating style. He really does adhere to the philosophies in his book, The Art of the Deal. But he has a respect for Carney, that’s why he hasn’t personally attacked him. Canadians and Americans always find their way back together. Every time there’s a trade dispute, they eventually resolve it, because the stakes and the rewards are simply too high not to. Really nice to meet you Kelley!

The system is broken everywhere. It is not a US, Canada construct, it’s an everywhere phenomenon. This happens every several generation and the system resets to something new. The model we have outlined is the most likely outcome of the next evolution. It will bring tremendous new opportunities but most importantly, create the mechanism for people to directly participate in a new cycle of wealth creation. Democracy is participate sport, it requires people to get involved in order to win.

@InvitasCo Thank you for your post. Lots to think about in it and the positivity is refreshing. However, until the US economy is being managed by people who understand economics, our economic future will be largely affected by an uneducated robber baron who seems unable to tell the truth.

@BillFetters357 Hi Bill, it will. AI and robotics is going to automate nearly all labor. That means the entire economic model is about the change. This is inevitable, Mathematically, the countries that can congeal to this outcome, will win it all. Thanks for taking the time.

Cynthia, we’ve read your comments, thoughtful and insightful as always. But let’s set aside the hate and personal attacks. You’re better than that. Social media thrives on outrage because it’s viral and addictive, but it comes at a cost: it erodes mental health for the sake of clicks. Negativity consumes everything in its path. Just look at the people hurling insults at strangers with different points of view, that’s just not healthy, it helps no one, except maybe foreign adversaries. Canada and the U.S. need each other, especially in the race for AI and Robotics. When you have a moment, read the other post, that’s the race both sides must win, and it won’t happen without working together. This is a relationship rooted in generations of mutual support when it matters most. The negotiation rhetoric? It’s just noise. Don’t let it fuel division or hate, this is a business negotiation, nothing more. But if a deal comes together with a structure like the one proposed, it could shape the future. And what does Canada get out of the deal? It’s in the second post. Aligned with the U.S., Canada has the opportunity to become a manufacturing and resource superpower. This is the only sustainable and efficient way for a nation to truly take care of its population, by becoming a global supplier of everything valuable. That’s why AI, robotics, natural resources, and both physical and cyber security are so critical. Both countries need each other to stay competitive against the emerging global blocs that are starting to wake up. Being just a supplier of raw materials might seem fine, but it means paying a premium for the finished goods shipped back to you. Other countries profit off your resources, and in the end, you’re essentially giving them back the money, and then some, just to buy the final product. That’s not a winning model. Other POVs are most welcome.
