In 1863, England created The Football Association (FA) and standardized the rules of what became Association Football.
At the time there were multiple versions of football - rugby football, association football, and other local football codes.
British students had a habit of shortening words and adding ”-er”:
Rugby = Rugger
Association = Assoc. = Soccer
England invented the word 'soccer' then spent the next 160 years making fun of Americans for using it.
