About 6% of U.S. MD seniors don't match into residency (2024 AMA data, post-SOAP). Of those who start, overall attrition is ~4.8% (one large cohort study), though it ranges 2-7%+ by specialty (higher in surgery/psych).
Roughly 9-11% of MD grads thus never complete full residency, which typically blocks unrestricted licensure and board-certified practice in most states.
Data varies yearly/specialty; most who match do finish and license.

PSA for parents of newborns:
No one told us, when we brought our youngest home from the hospital, that we should try to keep him away from other people (including our older kids) until his immune system got stronger.
Then he got RSV & would have died if we hadn't brought him to the emergency room at Children's Hospital in LA.
So now I'm telling you.

Believe the Chinese have a custom where the newborn and new mom are sequestered at home for a month postpartum (with someone to take care of them).
Think this might an example of a custom rooted in some real multi-generational wisdom (of the type Joseph Heinrich discusses in The Secret of Our Success).

Have been mulling the following recently:
1. When I was in college, there were retired people auditing ~all of my lecture classes
2. Turned out this was a program offered by the college to retired people who lived near campus
3. I decided that was how I wanted to spend my retirement
Now I see:
1. A wave of Boomer retirements happening
2. Many of these people hungry for friends / community, and
2. Many colleges in tough financial circumstances
And I think there is an opportunity to build or renovate apartment buildings walking distance from colleges offering this kind of program, and rent them to retirees.

@bethanyjbabcock @Michael_Cohen__ I’ve also heard of group plans from religious groups or churches, but I don’t know much about them or how to find them. Coverage is variable, for example I head of one patient on one of these plans who didn’t have coverage for dialysis.
