How would you know if a guy who has already broken some laws and is now running at you with an object in-hand doesn't intend to physically assault you or take someone in your custody? Are you honestly arguing a cop must allow a person, who they just witnessed breaking some laws, bum-rush them and sustain physically harm before the cop can even use *non-lethal* means to repel the incoming assailant? That's bananas, it would effectively mean you can never use any repellent force until you are hurt.
