1976...on today's date #2 Marquette edged out #16 Western Michigan to improve their record to 27-1 and set up the Elite 8 showdown against #1 Indiana in the next round. A classic Marquette defensive game which allowed WMU to stay close throughout. The Broncos were more than happy to make it a half court game, and slow the pace to have a chance at an upset. It was the 23rd consecutive win for the Warriors. The Warriors were led by Butch Lee's 16 points and Lloyd Walton's 12 in a game in which MU were not at their best, perhaps looking ahead to IU. Walton also injured his calf in the second half, an injury that was overcome during this game, but proved to be a costly one in the next round. Marquette would win the contest 62-57, but trailed by one point with under 8 minutes to play. At the two-minute mark, MU only led 58-57 when Bo Ellis hit a key shot to stretch the lead to three. A defensive stop, and free throws ultimately sealed the Broncos' fate. McGuire would say (tongue in cheek) after the game, "Marquette never looks good" to reporters questioning their rather pedestrian victory.

Family & character will likely be huge keys to who Shaka chases in the portal. Fans have no real way to know those behind the scenes attributes. I think we should be cautious about pushing for specific players. Numbers matter, but not in a vacuum. It should be interesting. #mubb
