Anyone but Caruana winning the Candidates would be a disappointment for chess fans who don't have a horse in the race.
Every real chess fan wants the world champion to be the best player in the world.
Some will say that's impossible without Carlsen. Those people were saying the same thing about Karpov in 1975. The only difference is that Carlsen still plays, just not classical. The new fast classical format was introduced for him to return. I don't have a strong opinion on it yet, but here's what's clear:
Carlsen has played 34 classical games since 2024. Not technically inactive by FIDE rules, but the rules need to change. Tennis figured this out. If you don't play, you lose ranking.
Nakamura, world no. 2, would have played almost the same 34 games as Carlsen since 2024 if not for Mickey Mouse events.
So the only two players rated over 2800 are, in the best case, semi-retired from classical chess.
Caruana? 151 classical games since 2024. Rating consistently around 2800, now world no. 3. He is the best active player in the world. Period.
The best player is determined by classical rating, and it should be determined by who actually plays, not by comparing active players to retired ones. I hope the best active player wins the Candidates 2026.

Ratings are meaningless.
Magnus and Hikaru are largely inactive. Wesley plays only in closed StLCC tournaments, so does Alireza. Vishy, Leinier, Duda don't play anything. Le Quang Liem has a job. They are all in the top 20, hoarding ratings while the active players bleed Elo.

Candidates 2026 shaping up to be one of the weakest by rating in over a decade 📉 The average rating sits around ~2749, lower than every modern edition except 2024 (2744). For context: 2013 — 2786 (strongest ever) 2016 — 2777 2018 — 2785 2020 — 2773 2022 — 2766 Despite stars like Nakamura (~2810) and Caruana (2795), the overall field is dragged down by several players in the mid-2700s / high-2600s. Still elite, but historically weaker. Should FIDE rethink the qualification system to ensure the absolute strongest field every time

This is one of the best books I've ever read.
The core problem C Thi Nguyen nails: we've handed our lives over to metrics.
The issue is that any metric is a compression of something richer, and once the metric exists, we end up optimising for the metric instead of the thing it was supposed to measure.
Examples: Step counts. Likes. School rankings. Citation counts. Calorie counts. Sleep scores.
These numbers are so clear and easy to track, we start optimising for them.
- A teacher starts teaching to the test because that's what the ranking measures.
- A researcher picks safe topics because those get cited.
- You post something you love, it gets 12 likes, and you feel like it wasn't worth sharing - because the number has become your sense of value.
He calls it value capture - when a simplified score replaces the rich, complex thing it was supposed to represent.
So what's the solution? He finds it in an unlikely place: games.
In a game, simple goals are fine because you put it down when it's over. A gamified life has no "put it down" moment.
But games also prove we have an ability most of us forget about: we can fully buy into a set of values and then choose to step back out. You do it every time you finish Monopoly and stop caring about plastic hotels.
The fix then isn't abandoning metrics - it's noticing when a useful shorthand has become the thing you're living for.
Seriously, read this book (it'll also bump your Goodreads number up by one if you need a reason.)

Ramai rupanya yang tak faham macam mana cara penentuan bulan baru dalam Islam.
Secara asasnya, bulan baru akan disemak pada setiap 29 haribulan mengikut kalendar Hijrah. Kalau anak bulan nampak, maka bulan tu 29 hari je. Kalau tak nampak, kita cukupkan jadi 30 hari.

@iiapaii Ya betul. Ada kisah mahsyur pasal perkara ini, tapi secara amnya dalam Islam, kita memperakui tak semua tempat akan dapat awal bulan yang sama.
Justeru bukan kepentingan untuk satu dunia sambut Raya pada hari yang sama, lagi-lagi kes negara terhalang awan dan hujan.
