My previous post on Pope Francis’s saying, “When there is life, there is tension, and there is conflict”, is connected to the ongoing debate, mostly within Arewa social media circles, about the colours Dan Bello chose for those class complexes. Under normal circumstances, the project should simply be celebrated, and that is it. However, to my sheer shock, the satirist-cum-philanthropist was dragged through the mud, and his generosity was condemned solely for the choice of colours used in painting the building. Pope Francis was vindicated. What happened to our Islamic and home training in interpreting others’ words, actions and inactions in the best possible light until proven otherwise (“Husn al-Zann”)? Isn’t it what we call “kyautata zato”? It is. In semiotics, we learned that colours, symbols, objects, gestures, etc., can and do mean different things to different people, in different contexts and places. For instance, while the rainbow colours may signify LGBTQ+ in some contexts, South Africa is globally celebrated as—and called—the Rainbow Nation, and that is also reflected on the country’s national flag. Again, the swastika means very different things in Germany and India. While it signifies prosperity and good fortune in India, it is associated with the Nazi Party and genocide in Germany. If I put one in my office today, I may lose my job tomorrow! Also, we have the Red Cross in some countries and the Red Crescent in others, and both do the same work. Why? The cross and crescent signify different things to Muslims and Christians. General BMB and his supporters could and should do better. Likewise, we should rejoin them with reason, without abuse or insults. Sadly, I have seen many people resort to invective, calling him unprintable names. Two wrongs do not make a right. Everyday this life gives me more reason to stay humble and treat people with absolute respect and kindness. The Qur’an verse that says “Walaqad karrammna bani adama” reveal its deeper meaning before me following a series of political events that unfolded in kaduna state. Few years ago, @elrufai fought @ShehuSani with everything he had and frustrated life out of him for simply refusing to put pen to paper for a loan. He did everything possible to expunge him out of the political stratosphere at the moment— nearly erased his political relevance entirely. Today, the same Shehu Sani is on the verge of becoming a senator while the embattled ex Governor is getting swindled from one anti-graft agency to another. Accord humans their deserving respects and rights. Treat people with dignity. Never dehumanize others because of a temporary position of power. No matter how influential or untouchable someone may seem, God has a way of vindicating His servants — sometimes in equal measure, sometimes even greater, and always in His own time. Be humble.

Direct primaries wato kato bayan kato ko? Ba da ni ba, wai gada a makabarta! If I were a candidate in any party’s 2026 primaries especially that of APC happening today, I would either accept the outcome of their already “arranged” consensus or simply stay away from the so-called direct primaries altogether! In 2011, I contested for the State Assembly under the banner of the Congress for Progressive Change CPC. We held direct primaries across 11 wards. I won convincingly in 7 of them. But when the final result sheets emerged, the story had magically changed. Because another candidate had bought over the party officials and agents responsible for conducting the exercise. And here is the painful reality. That result sheet is your only evidence. If you decide to challenge the outcome in court, whatever is written on that paper becomes the “truth” the courts will rely on. Once the party leadership decides they don’t want you as their candidate, they simply hoard the original results, disappear with the process, and later produce whatever figures suit their agenda. Shikenan. They’ve finished you politically before the real election even begins! Still, you cannot stop people from contesting in direct primaries. Everyone believes their own case will be different. So sometimes, the only teacher left is experience itself. Let people participate and witness firsthand how deeply flawed and manipulated our version of internal party democracy can be in Nigeria. My father always says there are three kinds of people who never want to hear the word “NO” 1. A man trying to date a woman 2. A politician contesting an election 3. A person seeking a loan Tabbas, Baba ka yi gaskiya! To everyone who has suffered injustice in the name of “democracy” in Nigeria, especially those participating in APCs direct primaries today, my sincere sympathies. Many people entered the process believing in fairness, only to discover that the outcome had already been written long before the voting started! Akwai kura a kasar nan!
