The leader of the “Citizens of the USSR” sect has been arrested in Moscow
Vladimir Koryakin calls himself the “General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.” He faces up to six years in prison on extremism charges.
Members of the sect led by Koryakin deny the collapse of the USSR and refuse to pay utility bills because they do not recognize Russian documents or the laws of the Russian Federation.
According to various estimates, the “Citizens of the USSR” movement has up to 10,000 supporters. The sect was previously designated an extremist organization and banned in Russia.
In 2022, another prominent member of the movement, Sergey Taraskin, who called himself the “Acting President of the USSR,” was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony on extremism charges.
