One reason many Catholics no longer go to confession frequently is that the sacrament subtly drifted from “confession and absolution” toward “spiritual counseling.” Most Catholics are willing to accuse themselves of sins briefly and regularly. Fewer are willing to enter into an extended personal conversation every few weeks. The traditional confessional, the screen, brevity, clarity, and sacramental reserve all lowered the barrier to grace. The sacrament felt objective, medicinal, and accessible rather than emotionally burdensome. Confession is not primarily therapy or spiritual direction. It is sacramental mercy.

@BackwardsFeet Love this idea especially because we somehow can’t figure out if we’re allowed to shake hands five years after the pandemic.

The only reason we don't have this is because in the middle ages, nobles would fight over who was more senior and would receive the Pax first, so it became limited to the sanctuary in the TLM — and then we get the overcorrection of praxis post-V2.

The sign of peace should return to a more ritualized form. The priest kisses the altar to receive the Pax and then passes it to the deacon, who passes it to a server, who passes it to the people, who spread it through the congregation in a wave like the Light at the Easter Vigil.

I stood like this, about five feet from the fire, as the altar server tried to take a photo for 20 seconds and the right side of my face started to become medium rare
