I FUCKING HATE LOCALIZERS WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO DO THIS SONG AND DANCE THAT NONE OF THEM CARE ABOUT JAPAN OR ITS AUTHORS?
HOW THE FLIPPING FREEDOM FLYING FUCK DO YOU GO FROM A CULTURAL HONORIFIC TO A LOSER FUCKING NICKNAME? JUST SPIT ON THE AUTHOR, IT WOULD GET YOUR INTENT ACROSS MORE @Crunchyroll
“Oh it doesnt translate well” DO YOU NOT HAVE GOOGLE? CAN YOU NOT LOOK UP THE CONCEPT OF DIFFERENT CULTURES COMMUNICATING DIFFERENTLY?
“Well its being changed for the au-“
NO. ITS BEING CHANGED BY LOSERS WHO HATE JAPAN FOR PEOPLE WHO DONT CONSUME FOREIGN MEDIA. EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO CONSUMES FOREIGN MEDIA IS FINE WITH LEAVING CHAN SAN KUN SENPAI ETC IN BECAUSE ITS JAPANESE MEDIA MADE FOR A JAPANESE AUDIENCE WITH JAPANESE PEOPLE IN MIND. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO REMOVE THAT YOU COLONIZING CULTURE DEFILER? I HATE LOCALIZATION SO MUCH.
SO. SO. MUCH.

@Baezelclast @nocontextmemes I thought it was Rachel Levine...
English

@nocontextmemes The real Quaker Oats man is on the left, the thing on the right is a failed clone that escaped and is currently stealing lungs in the greater New England area.
English

@Mrshoujo @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods -kun is warmer, closer, *cuter*. Diminutive -y or -ie nicknames are warmer, closer, cuter. Dan to Danny, Elaine to Ellie. It's a reasonable and logical way to convey the sentiment. It's just such an ingrained part of English, people don't register, even as they're doing it.
English

@Mrshoujo @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods A boy meets his GFs father for the 1st time. He says "That's Mr. Smith, to you" that's formality, coldness. We all understand when he says "Call me Hal", a wall has come down. The relationship is now warm. It's like NTs can't see the western cultural equivalent for the trees.
English

@RennieTheRingo @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods Lol... Just learn the language and watch the original if you're that committed.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods Is not unrealistic at all, it has been done for decades, don't come here with what aboutisms we are talking about japanese media and a site that sells itself as a providers of it here and you don't need a language course to understand simple honorifics used heavily in anime.
English

@RennieTheRingo @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods We manage to properly translate dramas, video games and literally every other language on earth's media, but the sacred anime texts are somehow load bearing the entire culture? Yeesh.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods Why stop at removing honorifics? let's remove after school clubs, let's remove Japanese food, let's just remove any japanese aspect that the watcher may need to learn about to understand it shall we? cuz cultures be damned we need mass appeal not cultural representation right?
English

@s_s_fe @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods Korean drama is similar. Columbian and Mexican telenovella, French film, all have nuances that are approximated. Good translation let's me watch without knowing each language's particulars.
English

@s_s_fe @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods I watch Chinese drama/donghua. Several honorifics are used. The official translations usually don't add it. It makes the subtitles read more naturally. We can feel the intent from expressions and tone. It is preferable. Because I watch many languages and just want to enjoy it.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods 「

@RennieTheRingo @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods There are hundreds of languages that export media. This is an unrealistic expectation and would overwhelm audiences if applied generally. People want to watch and enjoy, not take a language course with every new media. But most only care when it's Japan.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods Yes they should, honorifics are used in the absolute vast majority of animes to represent the kind of relationship characters have with one another, it wouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes to learn and understand how they work and it would help make sense of a lot of situations.
English

@s_s_fe @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods There are hundreds of languages that export media. This is an unrealistic expectation and would overwhelm audiences. People want to watch and enjoy, not take a language course with every new media.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods

@s_s_fe @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods When western media is imported to Japan, -chan, -san, -kun, are added, yes? Ore, watashi, yes? You could remove it and make Japanese viewers learn English grammar, but it would make understanding less intuitive to the average viewer that just wants to enjoy the story.
English

@PrincessPeprmnt @Rorro_Lux @AyakaMods

@really_martha @V3dn3y @Antbaze97 @MadamSavvy Not saying it never happened re any game anywhere, ever. But it hasn't escaped the weeb zone and contaminated my feed like the anime discourse does regularly. Separate issue from bad translations.
English

@really_martha @V3dn3y @Antbaze97 @MadamSavvy Rephrase. I haven't seen huge, viral demands that FF7R use -chan, -san, etc. Compared to the anime space, where it is prevalent.
