Pope Leo grew up in Chicago.
I grew up in Lebanon.
I wasn't forced to leave Lebanon because there was peaceful coexistence.
I was forced to leave Lebanon because Islamic terrorists blew up my home and killed many of the people I grew up with.
I wish the Pope would talk to the persecuted Lebanese before making ignorant statements about countries he knows very little about.

Most Somalis in Britain live in London.
Most white Brits from the rest of the country cannot afford to live in London.
72% of Somalis claim benefits and get their housing paid in London.
Average private sector rent in London for a 3-bed house is £2000 to £3000 a month.

On January 28 Mandelson was denied developed vetting clearance for his post as our man in DC
On January 30 the formal Foreign Office offer hiring him said ‘your [developed vetting — DV] security clearance has been confirmed by the Vetting Unit.’
We now know this not to be correct. He had failed DV status.
So who in these two days decided to overrule the vetters?
What possible motive could Robbins have for taking such a huge decision on his own, without reference to No 10 or the cabinet office or even the Foreign Sec (then Lammy)?

Olly Robbins resigns as top civil servant in the Foreign Office. I doubt that will be the end of the matter.

Oh yes. Lebanon is a wonderful exemplar of peaceful coexistence if you exclude the civil war from 1975-1990 that claimed the lives of 150,000+ people, and forced my family to flee. Thank you @Pontifex for your suicidal empathy.

The Pope cites Lebanon as an example of peaceful “coexistence” between Christians and Muslims. Fun fact: Lebanon was literally created to be a homeland for persecuted Christians in the Middle East. And it was for a few decades. The moment Muslim invaders thought they had the numbers, they started a civil war that lasted 15 years because they didn’t want to live with the same Christians who made them part of the country. Thousands of Christians were massacred, Muslims became the majority, Hezbollah took over, and the country hasn’t known peace ever since. Lebanon is the first and ultimate example that coexistence between Christians and Muslims is quite literally impossible. It’s mind-blowing that anyone would use it as an example of coexistence, let alone the Pope.

We now have the Government response:
Neither the PM nor 10 Downing Street nor the Cabinet Office knew the Foreign Office had decided to ignore the fact Mandelson had failed his security vetting.
Call it the ‘know-nothing’ government.
But it leaves a major question unanswered: why would the FO take it on itself to make such a huge judgement call — and not inform/consult Downing Street?
What was in it for the FO? It hadn’t even necessarily wanted Mandy, unlike Starmer and the 10 Downing Street operation.
Doesn’t add up.

BREAKING NEWS (with the potential to be massive): The Guardian reveals Peter Mandelson failed advanced security vetting before becoming US ambassador. He was initially denied developed vetting clearance in January 2025 - weeks after Keir Starmer had officially announced his appointment. Foreign Office was ‘encouraged’ to deploy a rarely-used power to override the recommendation from security officials. The Government promised total transparency on the Mandelson affair after MPs forced it to release of a batch of documents about the process. But nothing it has released reveals this startling fact.
