@iCe_apps_Wey No, everyone is supported and the expectations are clear. We only hire people we are sure can meet those expectations.

@ProfTeetsTweets Your department has maintained a record of never denying tenure for over 20 years, which speaks volumes about its inclusive and supportive culture. 👏 But it makes me wonder, do you think this policy of “rarely saying no” might sometimes increase the pressure on everyone?

@iCe_apps_Wey Maybe, the process isn’t perfect, but we do the best we can with limited information. Our department hasn’t denied someone tenure in over 20 years so I guess we’re doing something right.

Indeed, I've heard from many friends that evaluations can be highly subjective, sometimes even more so than the research content itself, testing one's ability to articulate and package ideas. Do you think this situation might cause some highly promising newcomers to be overlooked?

@iCe_apps_Wey There’s a lot of subjectivity inherent to the application review, but to be competitive we need to see a convincing track record of previous success (via CV and letters) and proposals that identify important/interesting problems and outline compelling solutions.

New profile pic... Finally came to terms with the fact that I'm not a 29-year-old postdoc anymore. Ageing like fine milk.

Our most recent work on Cu(I) NacNac chromophores, this time capped by phosphines, is out in @DaltonTrans. Congrats to Ashish on leading his first publication in our group, and all other coauthors for their efforts. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

@GriceChemistry I really like this database: photochemcad.com It may not be obvious which ones are/are not water soluble, but they do specify the solvents used for all of the included data.

#chemtwitter is there a resource/paper with water soluble dyes, and their wavelengths and molar adsorbtivities?

Congrats to Sungwon on her first @J_A_C_S paper, revealing new insights to improve red phosphorescence quantum yields in cyclometalated platinum. She is on the market for a national lab or academic postdoc, and whoever hires her is getting a great one. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.10…

Excited to kick off this search for our next inorganic colleague. If you do inorganic synthesis of any type and are looking for a TT job, we hope you’ll apply. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about the search or about being a synthetic inorganic chemist at UH.
UH Chemistry@uh_chem

The Department of Chemistry @UH_Chem will conduct a faculty search at tenure-track assistant professor level this fall, in the field of synthetic inorganic chemistry broadly defined. The priority date is Oct. 15. Please send your application! @Chemjobber #chemjobs

Oh hey, it's September which means I no longer have any adjectives in my job title (for the first time in my life?). Grateful to the second-generation group members who were instrumental to this promotion. It might be time to update my headshot after 10 years...

@FindlaterGroup @ProfArmani Apparently not Texas-wide. Ours are completely anonymous and not shown to us; we only get to see short quotes that appear in the Chair and Executive Committee letters.

@ProfArmani This is fascinating… I saw all my unredacted tenure letters. I believe it’s common practice in Texas - letter writers are informed during the request process that I will see them!

IMHO there should be an optional check box that could de-anonymize tenure letters. Maybe not share the letter but share my name. I spend a ton of time writing a letter that is used once. If people knew, then my letter could be used for other things - eg awards. #AcademicTwitter
