A tiny country produced half of the mathematical geniuses of the 20th century.
To an unrecognized extent, it was coffee shop culture. Hungary gave us von Neumann, Erdős, Teller, Szilard, and many others. Scientists called them "the Martians" because their brilliance seemed otherworldly.
It was in the Budapest coffee shops where mathematicians gathered. Where problems were discussed openly. Where young people could observe and join. Where intellectual passion was the social currency.
The Minta school created a culture of mathematical problem-solving. Students competed in mathematics journals. The brightest minds mentored the next generation in cafes, not classrooms.
We look at exceptional achievement and assume exceptional genes. Usually, we are looking at an exceptional culture.
The environment that produces world-class thinking has consistent features: immersion from a young age, visible role models, peer cultures that reward intellectual engagement, and opportunity to practice with real problems.
Classrooms with a standardized curriculum and age segregation produce none of these features.
The Martians were not born on Mars. They were raised in a culture that valued what they would become.
We could create such cultures again. We choose not to because we believe standardized schooling is the only way to educate children.

THE National Assembly is considering enacting a law to curb the persistent habit of Members of Parliament (MPs) absconding sittings. Speaker of the National Assembly, Tlohang Sekhamane, says the proposed law could see MPs losing their seats for failing to attend parliamentary sessions. His remarks follow the Monday’s abrupt adjournment of Parliament after the House failed to form a quorum. lestimes.com/?p=90049

@RealDoctorC Hakere boholo ba nako Basotho ba lefelloa ke Mmuso oa bona ho ea Amerika! Ba tla e khona

LESOTHO 🇱🇸 has been added to the list of "visa bond" countries by the US 🇺🇸. The glee with which this news has been received 'ka motseng ka mane' has left me rather puzzled. The general sentiment is that, 'it doesn't affect me. I will stay in 🇱🇸. Only travel to 🇿🇦..."
Meanwhile, only a few days ago we saw videos of the younger princess happily celebrating Moshoeshoe's Day with fellow Basotho students in the 🇺🇸. This ruling means that family members of those students (and future ones) will probably no longer be able to attend the graduation ceremonies of their loved ones. 😢 Where is the sympathy for them? What about the concern for SMME leaders who might be looking to travel to 🇺🇸 to seek new markets? They too will be affected. Just two examples...
Overall, I am just left wondering - pelo tse bohloko tsee li bakoa keng hakaale Basotho such that we can no longer assess a situation from a position of sympathy & empathy even if we believe said situation does not affect us directly? Molato keng? 🤔

There were no visa bonds. You could just pay the cost of applying for a visa and if the visa was issued, you would travel. Joale ba bang ebe esale ba ea and end up overstaying in the US - effectively ba leka ho nyamella system.
