You're missing the first part of the point that Elon is making. He is saying that AI and robotics will increase efficiency in productivity to such extreme that the amount of wealth generating will be extraordinary. And the labor required to generate that wealth will be near zero.

You cannot sustain prosperity by just giving everyone checks. Prosperity comes by way of increasing efficient productivity where people can use less effort to provide more value to others. Individuals have to be productive to increase the wealth, else, it ends up being net consumption followed by a rise in prices to offset the generalized handouts.

1. It’s morally wrong to willfully violate the law. 2. Speeding is a violation of the law. Conclusion: Willfully speeding is morally wrong. Thoughts?

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Buying and selling is NOT capitalism. That’s trade. Capitalism is an employee generating $1,000 of value an hour but being paid $16.

Mixed feelings. I generally support more apartments being built because it means more roofs over people's heads, you and I are aligned on this point. But a blanket change like this could ruin more wealthy neighborhoods. We don't want to deatroy yhe American dream while trying to help people reach it.

The Democrats’ BUILD Act will allow developers to bring apartments to single family neighborhoods. They would be allowed to do this by right … ie no public hearing. Local authority will be tossed aside and suburban mayors are furious. What say you? Are you ok waking up tomorrow to find an apartment next door? See example below.

@drydenwtbrown How about this argument, You are trying to solve a problem that doesn't yet exist. Let's solve current problems and if and when AI massively disrupts employment as some predict, then we discuss UBI as a possible solution.

Anti-UBI people are making the conversation low IQ because they cannot make a strong argument that: 1. AI will not take the jobs 2. There is an alternative to government-funded income if AI takes the jobs Until they do that, their concerns about the moral hazards or impracticality of UBI are meaningless.

@Pro__Trading Actually as a percentage of income, the price of food dropped dramatically. For nearly all of human history food was the most expensive line item.

When tractors revolutionized farming, they could do the work of 50 men. Efficiency went up and production costs went dramatically down. So the cost of food went to almost 0 right? Wrong. The cost of food kept going up and hasn't stopped going up. It's going to be no different with AI.

There is no such thing as magical "infinite resources." All productive resources are scarce and require a market-valued productive end to become valuable to others. AI and robots can't magically meet all wants and needs without this price-based prioritization over scarce resources. And, the commercial feedback (payment) is necessary to repay the efforts expended so future value creation can take place.

My 5 yo just ripped apart a bug for no reason. I told him we don’t kill things weaker than us for no reason. He didn’t seem to understand. Normal boy trait? How do I teach him to be gentle and respect all God’s creatures (except wasps and mosquitoes and such)?

@usuallypregnant True. People today get it backwards. They think that they need to date more people for longer to find the right one. When they should find a good one and work together to become the best version of themselves together.

The reason why the divorce rates are so high nowadays is partly because people wait too long to get married. Why wait until your 30s to get married, when you have more baggage and your personality is more set in stone? When you get married at 20, you grow with your spouse. You're starting your marriage at zero and building your life together. Neither of you has 15 years of living alone, set in your ways, unwilling to compromise. No prenup arguments. By the time your 30 year old friends are still swiping on Tinder wondering why no one wants to commit, you already have a home, a family, and a man who has loved you through your entire adult life. Most young women, if they had to choose just one, would rather have the perfect marriage than the perfect job. But they take steps on a day-to-day basis to get better at their career, and make no intentional effort to get closer to a good marriage. You will never be more fertile or more adaptable than you are right now. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. It doesn't exist.

I don’t understand this argument. What good does “universal high income” do when all that would happen is massive inflation for the cost of goods? Awesome, now everyone’s a millionaire. And a computer now costs $20,000 because every retailer knows that everyone’s a millionaire.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government is the best way to deal with unemployment caused by AI. AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation.

@Kiradavis That is not the case. Elon was the biggest advocate there was for slowing down AI and adding regulations. When he saw that that wasn't going to happen, he decided to throw his hat in the ring to at least be able to influence the industry for the better.

What stuns me about this statement is that Elon would NEVER want his work to be replaced. He would NEVER stop working and creating and innovating bc his body tells him that is life. But he thinks the rest of us don’t want or need the same satisfaction of earning.

This should terrify Republicans. If they don't replace Alito and Thomas before January, they will likely not get another shot at it for at least 6 years. That would put them both well into their 80s. RBG is a lesson I am glad they refuse to learn.
Jan Crawford@JanCBS

BREAKING: Justice Samuel Alito NOT retiring. Sources close to Justice Alito confirm the Fox News report that he has decided not to step down this year. In addition, sources close to Justice Thomas tell me he’s not retiring. That indicates that this year, with the midterms on the horizon, Trump will not be making his 4th nomination to SCOTUS.
