@EJFreeAuthor @Caleb_the_Burke @thisguyheisaguy @MichaelFKane What about other varieties of esports outside of RTS and Starcraft style games, such as Counter Strike and Rocket League? In Rocket League especially, everyone is on an exactly even playing field with no balance changes or stats to speak of, so it all comes down to 3v3 team skill

They certainly have more of a physical component than chess, but I’d still argue that in the upper echelons of e-sports it comes down to who’s more aware of the game’s inner workings than who’s got the better build, as e-sports-focused games are deliberately balanced by the devs to preclude a “Terran is just stronger than Zerg” sort of situation (though this does happen from time to time). In high-level sports you win because you are better able on a physical level to execute on your game plan than your opponent. In high-level e-sports you win because you are better able to adapt your game plan to your opponent because your equipment and players are by and large equal. There are of course outliers (looking at you, South Korea), but in a sport the deciding factor ultimately boils down to the physical human element. To take a simplified example, you can have different training or techniques in powerlifting, but at the end of the day none of the theory matters if the other guy can pick up a heavier rock than you, and ultimately the heaviest rock is the point of the competition. Meanwhile in almost-sports like e-sports, yes the team with faster reflexes has an advantage, but a well-balanced video game has means to counter that with things like control abilities and passive buffs. You can’t cast Mass Slow on the New England Patriots (though they did figure out how to cast Mass Deflate for a couple decades).

Neat chart. I played chess quite a bit in school and even won a tournament in 9th grade. However the first time I played against an opponent that studied chess from a book I lost all desire to play. When he announced a strategy I used (named apparently though it was simply a formation I devised and liked) and then announced his counter strategy (that worked quite well against me) I was done. I beat him on the second game we played, none the less (and to his shock), but I realized that any serious game of chess I would ever play past that point would actually be a different game than the one I had enjoyed up until that point. This isn't a put down to the millions of people that are better than me because they have studied the game extensively. Serious talent and study involved. I just don't particularly enjoy getting beat by strategies deployed from a book rather than the mind of my opponent. All that is to say, this graph describes exactly why I've probably played less than five games of chess since I beat that guy in the second game 25 years ago. It's a lovely game at high level, but it's just not for me. (please don't take offense if you love to study chess lol. I promise I mean none 😅)

@LUCIDALPH4 I like how they're mad about buying a base, when their fursona design is literally bucket tool blue and it'd be REALLY easy for them to just fill in the base.
