Okay it's my 40th birthday tomorrow and I can do what I want. Order After Moses books from my website by tomorrow night and get $1.50 off. Paperback, hardback, E-book, and audio. Also if you get the paperback, I'll sign it, which I don't normally do. Discount applies automatically at checkout and will apply to multiple items, so if you wanted to buy a copy of After Moses for a 12 year old nephew that reads, now is a good time to grab an extra copy. (hint, hint) 😁 (Already discounted bundles and scratch and dents don't apply this time, so this sale is best for someone starting their collection or continuing it.) Anyway link below!

My grandfather is entering the final days of his life. He's 95 and he's ready to go home to his maker. But I thought I would tell a funny story. My mother and grandmother and I spent last night at the ER with him. About midnight the overnight hospitalist (doctor that treats patients while they are in the hospital) comes into the room. Talks to my grandmother and I for a few minutes and then begins to do a basic cognitive test on my grandfather. He starts with a simple question. "Can you tell me your name?" Now my grandfather (whose name is John) has slowed with age, but until the last few days has remained sharp, and if he has enough energy, a joker as well. He looks at the doctor, and while the confusion of his current ailment slowed his response, he eventually manages to confidently say "Juan." The doctor looks at him, then glances at my grandmother and I to see that we are laughing, before deciding that, yes, my grandfather despite his struggles managed to make a joke out of the test. He laughs. "Well I admit I was expecting a Juan to look at a little more Mexican." (My grandfather is the source of the red hair in my family and couldn't possibly look any less like a Juan) Long pause from my grandfather as he processes that. "Si." The doctor proceeded to casually call him Juan the rest of the night. A day later the decline has worsened and the end has drawn near. I passed by the doctor in the hall on the way into the ICU, had a quick chat with him about my grandfather, and then he told me that he'd never forget the 95 year old red head claiming he was Juan during a cognitive test. May we all manage to be so memorable in our last days. 😅

If you want to argue it feeds into the Chani changes then I can get on board with that. As for Leto not being stripped naked, well it's a pg-13 movie and quite a bit got cut that wpuld push it R. Anyway you're welcome to your opinion. Like Lord of the Einfs, Dune is an expansive enough work that you simply can't have a 1 right 1 adaptation. But you are absolutely welcome to disagree!

Alright, my sci-fi friends (looking at you, @RedHedgedragon, @DavidRoomeAuth, @MichaelFKane, @TheMiddleborne), I have enjoyed the first two Dune movies as such, and I’ll be there for the third. However, I honestly don’t see myself getting to the books any time soon. The reading and writing stack is just too high at the moment. So, tell me (without too many spoilers), what are the major differences I’m missing out on? Also, I’ve heard rumors that Herbert wrote Messiah to counter the interpretation many fans were coming up with for the first book, so would love to hear more about that. And, lastly, seeing as how most of my sci-fi knowledge extends to Star Wars, what influences and overlaps do you see there? Go.

@plainrunner2 From thr practical standpoint, the only thing I regretted not recording by volume six of After Moses was not having a master character list. I was forgetting a few minor characters by the end. I'll be keeping a character list this time.

Them: You must have a Lore Bible. Me: First off, this is an archaeological dig on another world, so watch your step. Second, it’s a treasure hunt with a map that was torn in half during a desperate escape which I only remember in scattered dreams. Third, it’s a Library tour in a city that makes Alexandria look like a malfunctioning smoke alarm. Fourth, it’s an age spanning drama in which I’ve only met a handful of characters, and they’re not always forthcoming. Fifth, it’s a spiraling song whose instruments I’m still learning to play, calling for a voice that is still finding its strength. Last of all, some of my best inspirations come from tying up seeming contradictions. This is an adventure, my friend. We’ll get there when we get there, and no, I won’t know where ‘there’ is till it’s written. But I’d love for you to come along.

Those last 2 minutes not being a quiet Jessica/Chani moment change more than anything else IMHO. There are quite a few others but a lot of them work. There's a time jump of a couple years in the novel for instance. The movie doesn't really suffer because it isn't there. As I said under Marlin's post, Dune can be considered a perfect standalone novel. If you read past the first book, you kind of have to read 4 to get back to where it all makes sense. But 1 works perfectly if you ever feel the need to bite.

Dune is absolutely worth reading whenever you can find the time and can only increase your enjoyment of the movies. Many background details and world-building beats in the movies become intelligible and really cool when you have context too explain what they are like the Mentats, Guild Navigators and CHOAM highliners. Messiah is more debatable and everything after is frequently naysayed and in your constrained reading environment I would probably concur with only recommending book one despite usually arguing for the full Frank Herbert canon due to the ingenuity and depth/weirdness he goes with the theme of human attempts to overcome entropy and persist with no God but man.

@MichaelFKane He says content which impies its meant for others, but if everyone can make this content with no skill or monitary investment, why would they ever consume his content?
