#WIL | Today marks the second day of engagements in Pretoria, Gauteng, where stakeholders continue discussions on the Policy for School-based Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Ms Lala Maja, Director for Initial Teacher Education at the Department of Basic Education and programme lead for the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme, outlines the purpose of the engagement. She explains that the process forms part of a collaborative initiative between the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training to develop a dedicated policy that will guide how schools support student teachers during their teaching practice. Technical expertise for the policy development is being provided by the Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) in Finland through the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa. The consultation process brings together universities, provincial education departments, teacher unions and civil society to share current practices and inform the design of research instruments that will guide the national survey and policy development process. The initiative recognises Work Integrated Learning as a critical component of the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ), helping student teachers bridge the gap between university learning and classroom practice through structured mentorship and support in schools. Findings from the consultation and research process will inform the draft policy, expected to be presented later this year. #TeacherDevelopment #WorkIntegratedLearning #EducationZA #GovZAUpdates

On Tue 24 Feb our Right to Read Steering Committee attended the @ReadingPanel conference. 15% of Grade 3s can’t read a single word. Progress is emerging, but we need to build binding National Literacy Regulations so every child reads for meaning by age 10. #RightToRead

DBE flagged gaps in reporting + implementation. Provinces vary on budgets, materials, teacher prep and time for literacy. Without binding National Literacy Regulations, delivery stays uneven. DBE must set a roadmap so every child reads for meaning by 10. #RightToRead

The #2030ReadingPanel released this week lays bare the scale of South Africa’s foundational literacy crisis. The findings reveal only 30% of pupils in grades 1 to 3 are reading at grade level in their home languages. Read more 👉timeslive.co.za/news/south-afr… @TimesLIVE @Didi_Mash

The urgency is clear: 15% of Gr 3 learners can’t read a word in any language. There are promising steps (57k reading champions being deployed; BEd programmes under review), but without binding National Literacy Regulations, delivery will stay uneven & learners will be left behind
The Common Sense@CommonSense_ZA

Only 30% of South African Grade 1–3 learners read at their expected level. Even in the richest schools, just 60% meet benchmarks, and 15% can’t read a single word. Language and socio-economic gaps make the crisis worse. Provinces are rolling out reading programmes, but national focus is fading. Yes — the crisis is solvable, and provinces are showing what works. But progress can’t depend on postcode. We need National Literacy Regulations with clear minimum standards and reporting, so every school gets the support needed for every child to read for meaning. #RightToRead

81% of children cannot read for meaning by age 10. But this crisis is solvable & provinces are already showing what works. That’s why former Deputy President Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka convened the #2030ReadingPanel to track progress & accountability. readingpanel.co.za

Parents and @equal_education members began engaging with the draft literacy regulations and what they could look like in practice. This is part of the longer work to strengthen regulations and push for reforms that support real reading outcomes in schools. #RightToRead #Literacy
